The USDA database (http://www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/foodcomp/search/) says that 1 cup of golden raisins is 498 calories and 131g of carbs, of which 98g are sugar. So I would definitely call them a simple carb since they are primarily sugar.

Unfortunately, all dried fruit is very high in sugar since the sugar (fructose) becomes concentrated as the fruit is dried. Sad, because it's all delicious.

Grapes are 1 cup when fresh and only 2T when dried - that's how concentrated the sugar becomes.

I eat them anyway I just don't eat a lot at once. I add them to bran muffins, or sprinkle them on a salad.
