Default Snacks for my kids

I need to get rid of all junky food in the house in order to lose weight. Thought I say I buy it for the kids, I always end up eating the chips, candy and cookies I buy "just for them", so I need new snack ideas that are healthy for both them and me...any suggestions would be appreciated...........

Hi Tamra!

Think of it this way, you are not only removing temptation from yourself you are also leading your kids into a healthy lifestyle

Some of favorite snacks:

baby carrots with hummous for dipping
whole wheat crackers with low fat cream cheese or low-fat peanut butter
green grapes
sliced strawberries
summer berries (raspberries, blueberries, blackberries) with some low fat vanilla yogurt on top
cucumber slices with low fat dip
snackwells vanilla cookies (2)
ginger snaps (2)
low-fat pringles
24 cashews or 15 almonds (unsalted)
baked tostitos or baked chips as a treat
quaker rice cakes
low fat cheese with sliced pears or apples

and one of my new favorites - Danon low-fat yogurt mousse- the vanilla flavor tastes like cheesecake, it is like having dessert that is good for you!

Hope this helps

Great Ideas...I'm printing them off and taking them shopping with me....we do like freshe fruit, but that gets kind of boring sometimes.

My daughter loves sliced apples dipped in melted peanut butter. Gives her fruit and protein.

I usually only give her the serving amount suggested (of peanutbutter) and when it's melted.....it looks like more. And she's always satisfied.

A favorite that she has found in a kids magazine is a Tortilla wrap (you can get low fat) and spread peanutbutter and banana's then roll it up.

Having your kids experiment makes it more fun than telling them it's time to eat healthy.

Hope this helps some....

Marti

my kids love baby corn
black olives, with a serving of triscuits and cheese
( i like to slice veggies thin and add to the triscuits and cheese)
what i have found is that what you keep in the house and what you eat will rub off on the kids. kids are very adaptable. i just phased out most of the junk food and changed the whole families way of eating slowly. now a year later we all eat/snack healthier. ( them more than me sometimes ) good luck.

Default Suggestion

1) Nutritous dried cereal (Kashi Heart to Heart is really good)
2) Lowfat string cheese
3) Frozen Pretzels (you can heat them in the microwave or oven)
4) Fruit Shakes (I always keep frozen fruit on hand and fat free half and half. Fat free half and half makes it much creamier than fat free milk. I HATE using ice cubes. It always leaves junks of ice which I find disgusting).

Hmmm let me think some more.

cut up veggies and dip [one of my friends keeps a tray of this all ready to go, and while she's fixing dinner, she gives it to her son to nibble on... i've seen him eat about 2 cups of veggies before dinner!!!!]
