Default How long does it take you to walk a mile?

I don’t know what happened – I tried to post this before (It's the Question thread) but nothing appeared on the thread and when I try and reply to it, it sends me to some weird message!!… Here goes again!

How long does it take you to walk a mile?

Calling all you walking buffs out there? I have added a two mile walk in during my lunch at work and I was just curious to see how long this takes you!

What is the most beneficial amount of time (in minutes) to walk a mile? I am sure the quicker the better but what is that actual range?

Thanks for the input!

A 15 minute mile will really get your heart pumping. If you buy walking tapes, most of the advanced ones are 15 minute miles.

Hi Gretchen!

I have read that it's great to aim for a mile in 15 minutes or less. Of course, when I started I was NOWHERE near that speed. I just started timing myself, and as it got more comfortable at a certain speed, I would push it just enough so that I could tell that I was exerting myself a little more.

Congrats on adding a lunch time exercise session ~ You rock!!!

I did my 2 mile walk in 30 minutes today which apparently is pretty darn good! I know it wouldn't have been that quick say.... 60 lbs ago!! And I could actually breathe and didn't feel like I was going to kill over!!

It usually takes me anywhere from 16 to 18 min. but I try not to push it. If I go any faster than that I end up doing a slow jog and I don't generally enjoy that because of the impact. I also wanted to add a note about the very first day I added walking to my routine at 300+lbs. I walked for a full 30 min. and and didn't quite make 3/4 of 1 mile, and I thought I was gonna die! I'm just so thankful that I can move my body with more ease now.

I'm somewhere between 14 and 15 minutes, but that's with a minute or two of jogging stuck in there and on a treadmill. The other day however I was at the farm for a family get together and ended up going the 4 miles around the section in just at an hour, no jogging. When I first started it almost killed me to do 2.8 on the treadmill, and now I can go an hour at 4.0. But I've been at it for a while.

Hmmm. I don't know how fast I am, since I don't measure the distance! Maybe I'lle check next time I'm on the treadmill.....

One thing that occurs to me Gretchen, is that maybe what counts is your heartrate. My understanding is that for fat-burning, you want to get it into the fat-burning zone, and keep going for a good while/as long as you can....for improving cardiovascular function, you need to get your heartrate into the cardio zone, which is higher, and therefore harder to sustain.

Well I usually take 30 minutes and just walk and see how far it takes me. At home I walk to the cemetery and back up and down hills, etc and from the corner to there and back is 1.5 miles but that's not counting walking from my house down the driveway and over to the side road.
