Question Question about veggies and unlimited lettuce

I know lettuce is unlimited. When I eat a salad with romaine lettuce for example, are my 2 cups of veggies per lunch and dinner IN ADDITION to the lettuce in my salad, or can I count the romaine lettuce as part of my 2 cup allowance?

Seems like a lot of vegetables to get down if I can't count the romaine!

Romaine does not count as a veggie. You don't have to eat salad but it helps fill the tummy and keeps away the big C for some people. When I started IP, spinach could be counted as your veggie or free if you had it raw. Spring mix wasn't free but now it is included in the unlimited lettuce. There are times I make a Caesar type salad and end up with no room for veggies but that is not following protocol. I'll usually have something light light kale or zucchini chips as they are nothing but air. Getting your veggies in is important. Lettuce is to help fill you up.

I just started 8/4 and my P1 sheet has the following greens listed as "Select Vegetables" (the kind you're supposed to eat 4 cups of each day) : arugula, cabbage, collards, cress, endive, field salad, kale, radicchio, sorrel, spinach, swiss chard and watercress.

Hope that helps

What is the date ate the bottom of your sheet? It should be 6/14. Many of those items are now in the unlimited. I'm trying to attach the link to the new sheet. Hopefully it works.

The link to the newest protocol sheets are posted at the top of each Daily Thread, the one that Lisa starts.

Thanks for all your answers. I guess some days I've been doing this wrong. I love big salads in the summer, with lots of chopped romaine. But I've been short on veggies without realizing.

Cold weather is easier with lots of veggies simmered in clear broth. I can get 4 cups a day easy that way.

Good Catch! (the date on mine is Dec 2013) Guess it doesn't matter when you started the protocol if your coach is out of date!

Default So, what veggies ARE unlimitted?

UNLIMITED RAW VEGETABLES/LETTUCE Arugula, Bibb lettuce, Boston lettuce, celery, chicory lettuce, cucumber, endives, escarole lettuce, frisée lettuce, green and red leaf lettuce, iceberg lettuce, mushroom, radicchio, radish, romaine lettuce, spinach and watercress lettuce.
SELECT VEGETABLES – 2 cups per meal – Weigh before cooking Alfalfa, asparagus, bamboo shoots, bean sprouts, bell peppers, broccoli, cabbage (all), cauliflower, celeriac, celery, chayote, chicory, collards, cucumbers, dill pickles, fennel, Gai Lan (Chinese broccoli), green onions, jicama, kale, kohlrabi, mushrooms, okra, onions (raw only), hot peppers, radish, rhubarb, sauerkraut, spinach, Swiss chard, turnip, zucchini/yellow summer squash.

I'm confused, I just noticed this, so what is unlimited and what counts as selected vegetables?

I may be wrong, but I took it to mean that you can eat unlimited amounts of those or use them as your daily quota or in addition to your 4 cups.

The unlimited is only if they're raw.
Cook them and then they fall under select.

Lettuces have always only been counted as unlimited and not a part of the select veggies. I'm not sure what IP's stance on the new unlimited veggies is...

I sort of saw it that way too?.. I figured since they are on the select list, you can use them as part of your select veggies counted towards your 4 cups BUT if you are still hungry and want more, then those that are ALSO on the unlimited list are the only ones you can have MORE of (raw only at that point).

By the way... Does ANYONE cook cucumbers?

My thoughts mirrored yours exactly, but you explained it much clearer than I did!

I saw it that way too Jlus.

And yes, I have cooked cucumbers. When they are large you can fry them like green tomatoes.

How much do veggies change when you cook them? I know onions carmelize. I'm struggling with my fitness pal because I think some roasted veggie options are using a lot more oil than I am but I don't want to just say the veggies are raw since I think the carb count might go up when cooked.

I should add that I know on P1 my carb count doesn't matter, but I'm just gearing up to be logging my food for P4.
