Question Just a wee question about bread!

Hey everyone,

I hope you are all having an awesome day! I just have a small question about bread. I'm sure many of us react differently to bread, but I was wondering if it causes bloat for anyone? I just count calories and do my best to eat whole foods in moderation. This week has been bread week though! Not gonna lie...it's been delish!

I know some people swear by lower carb diets and others say "eat what you want!" but I was just wondering if anyone has noticed and weight stalls or bloating due to eating bread, whether white or whole grain. Alternately, does anyone else eat lots and find it doesn't impede their weight loss efforts?

I'm leaning towards thinking that for me, it causes some bloating but doesn't affect weight loss so long as I stay within my calorie range.

What about you?!

It makes me feel a little bloated too, but I have to eat quite a bit of it to really feel the effects. I LOVE bread, so I am still going to eat it even if I do get a little bloated.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE bread. I would be a breadaholic if there were meetings to attend. When I was little, my dad would get 2 loaves of bread at the bakery and announce "one for the family, one for elvislover!". I mean, I heart heart heart bread.

But I don't eat it.

Ever.

Never ever.

My body bloats, I gain weight (even if within my calorie limits), I crave more and more bread and other carby goodness.

One of my friends is the same way (but there is no way anyone loves bread more than me!) and she only has it once a week, having 2 slices of glutenfree. She doesn't have a gluten issue that she knows of but if she eats more than the 2 slices (or any "regular" bread) she will gain weight no matter what.

Hmm...thanks for the feedback! I kept thinking I was invincible so long as I stayed within range...good to know that is not always the case!

If I am up a bit on Sunday, I'll know why!!!!

If you are having bloating issues with bread that tends to show that you have a gluten intolerance or your GI tract is getting thrown out if wack and it reacting to a strong stimuilant that is gluten. That I'd what happened to me when I tried to start eating healthier. I became hyper sensitive to bread, and through I loved it, I cut it out nearly 100%. After it calming down, I can eat some...but I felt better without it. So I am now leaning towards a paleo diet with limited bread. I normally have with a Burger or hotdogs....but I eat those without now too.

While it could be difficult to cut out bread...try gluten free bread and snacks first. Schär had some decent choices.

I love it but don't eat it.

My compromise is the teeny weeny low calorie loafs they sell. The 45 calorie a slice ones. I have two pieces for breakfast every day.

One of the things I miss most on my diet is bread. But it makes me big.

I've completely stopped eating bread on a regular basis. I'll only have it if DH wants to make burgers at home which only happens on cheat-days. It gives me HUGE cravings for sweets and all that fun stuff. Also, I don't like the bread over here. Since I'm German I'm used to REAL bread (yeah that's right!)

I am not against bread in the least but its best if its a nutritious type like - i.e. anything sliced cheap and nasty white bread.

Sourdough and italian whites are good quality and quite nutritious if you don't like the whole grains.

So long as you don't overdose and don't smother it in high fat stuff it should be fine.

I don't know about bloating. Do you mean constipated or a lot of gas? I have found a good solution for constipation is a few nuts. beans and lentils are also good. If you are getting gassy bloats, then you might have a food intolerance but of course it could be caused by any number of things. It could even be overeating!

It doesn't bother me. I did give up gluten during December to see if I had any sensitivity to it, but I didn't. Still I was glad that I checked.

I buy whole wheat bread. I don't eat it everyday, but I still eat it frequently. The key to everything is moderation and a variety of foods. Even though you should eat veggies everyday, having a variety of veggies over the course of the week is optimal.

I eat gluten free bread made from organic brown rice. It took me a bit to acquire a taste for it, but now I'm okay with it. You just have to make sure you toast it. Otherwise it falls apart

Any grainy carbs - bread, pasta, crackers, legumes, potatoes, rice, etc. - make me feel bloated. Not gassy....just like I can feel it sitting in my stomach like a rock because my digestive system doesn't have a clue what to do with it. Limiting the quantity (half a portion or less) reduces, but doesn't eliminate, this feeling.

If I eat wheat, the repercussions are swift and unpleasant. My body reacts like the wheat is poison and it has to get it out of my body by any and all means necessary. If I flood my body with wheat (as I did before admitting I was wheat intolerant) the symptoms are severe - constant abdominal pain, joint pain, tingling in my hands and feet, headaches, overall puffiness, brain fog.

If you experience bloating when eating grainy carbs, you are probably carb sensitive and/or intolerant. Your body just doesn't process them properly so it's best to restrict them or eliminate them entirely.

If you experience anything like what I described in the second paragraph, you are probably gluten or wheat intolerant (which are not the same thing) and you should be eating a gluten free or wheat free diet.

I am not super sensitive. One piece doesn't affect me much. But I love it so I have to be careful not to let one piece beget 3 or 4. However, I NEVER eat a non-worthy bread carb. I ate a lot of bad buns (aka meat holder) and the like. The rule is now it's got to be tasty and fresh or it doesn't even touch my hands.

If real bread doesn't agree with you, you can find recipes for alternatives, like non-wheat flours or even cauliflower or zucchini as the base ingredient instead of flour. I don't have a problem with bread other than wanting to eat too much it if there's some good butter nearby!

If all I ever had to eat was bread, I'd be the happiest person on Earth. However, once I start, I can't stop. My compromise, like Ian, is one slice of 45 cal. Pepperidge Farm a day.

When I used to eat a lot of it, it did cause some bloating, but that didn't stop me!
