My husband grew up on a diet largely like the one described, except maple syrup and honey were used here and there in home-made treats. Otherwise, absolutely no sugar, no processed foods. And the whole family is remarkably healthy, years later. But what's really striking is how bizarre and unusual the situation usually seems to other people. They're dumbstruck. "What do you mean, you don't eat sugar? Never?" It often makes others really uncomfortable, and he doesn't bring it up unless really questioned. I'm a convert now, but I thought he was a weirdo too, when we first met.
I never ate HFCS-laden processed crap to begin with, which surely helped, but my diet's a whole lot cleaner now, too.
