Indigestion is not usually a problem of the bowel. I think its a problem of the stomach and reflux, isn't it? But the advice about eating smaller meals more often is probably good if you are eating very large meals. You wouldn't be eating very large meals on 1600 calories per day.
Your idea about going slowly with the fibre is probably more on the button. My father had an operation recently and his bowel is smaller where he had the operation so he had to keep his fibre intake low at the beginning and now he occasionally gets a problem if he eats certain things, like grape skins which may not digest so easily as other fibre foods.
