Cool Commitment versus motivation

I always tell people the exact same thing when they ask me "what's your motivation to lose weight?"

IT ISN'T ABOUT MOTIVATION, IT'S ABOUT COMMITMENT!

And it's a damn good thing I'm committed to this journey because I lack all motivation today. It's *that* time of the month and all I want to do is stuff my face. But my commitment to getting fitter has established a routine in my life and that routine dictates I stay "on plan".

(P.S. there's no point to this post. I'm pms'ing, starving, and feeling grumpy so I thought I would remind myself (and maybe others); it's not about motivation, it's about commitment.)

Hi. Come sit by me. I'm also pmsing, starving and eyeing the donut box in the office.

I'm also burned in the butt a little because my boyfriend had the gall to say I started losing weight to "impress" him. I didn't think I needed to impress him. The worst part is he thought he was complimenting me because he said "your working so hard to lose weight for me is paying off. I'm definitely impressed!"

When he saw the look on my face, he backpedaled, but god. You're not the only thing I considered when changing MY body. And you haven't been keeping me at it.

I feel I'm in the back of your canoe right now, also! You are SO correct. I love how you put it. It truly is about commitment because motivation is like the ocean tide, but commitment is like the rock that stays put whether the tide is in or not! So - thanks for this, Mozzy. That was inspirational for me.

Mozzy. I needed this today. I'm way past the age (thankfully) where I have all the PMSing issues any more, but I've spent the last 6 weeks trying to get 10 pounds off. I needed to be reminded that it's about commitment and not motivation......in other words I need to string more than 1 day of staying on plan into a row!

Jane, I'm chuckling. I always wonder what goes through our guys minds some times when their assumption is that they are the center of our universes on every single action.

Thanks for this. For me, commitment is concrete and motivation is fluid. There will always be the commitment to become healthier and more active, but motivation varies. One week my motivation might be "insert holiday/event/deadline here" and another week my motivation might be a certain item of clothing that I want to look better in. The end result is the same: getting healthy. I just might take a different route to get there from day to day or week to week.

(and I'm right there with you on the hungry front! The Friday office pastry box is looking mighty tempting and I'm this close to rationalizing a cherry turnover as a fruit! Sticking with the apple I brought from home though.)

I sometimes tell myself "You don't have to want to--you just have to do it".

So, I don't have to want to exercise, I don't have to want to follow my eating plan for the day--wanting to is optional. It's sort of like "there is no 'try'".

Thanks for posting this, Mozzy!
