Default Maintainers Weekly Chat Feb 4 - Feb 10

Off to go birding on the North Shore of Boston this morning. There should be many ducks on the ocean - Harlequins are my favorite winter duck with their wild colors appropriate for their name. It'll be a test of my winter base layers since the outdoor temp reads 20 degrees Fahrenheit right now. I own enough clothes to stay both warm and dry. It's a matter of wearing (or packing) them instead of being overly optimistic thinking it'll stay warm and not rain.

I need summer. This winter business means I'm indoors more and indoors is where the food lives. February is a long month.

Enjoy your birding outing Bill. Hope you see lots if interesting fowl LOL and stay warm and dry.

The house lists today. I am excited and sad at the same time. It was my family home almost all my life, and I get a bit scared at the prospect of not having it there any more. And it'll be hard throwing out the rest of my parents stuff when I accept the offer to buy. I'm also kinda scared there will be no offers and then what the heck do I do? My realtors assure me it will sell.

Then there will be a new house (my first ever that I own) with new adventures and, eventually, a DOG!

Bill - agreed. February is a long drudge. The best year I can remember is the one where we scheduled a long weekend for a quick trip to the Caribbean toward the end of February. A dose of warm sand and sun and salt water was all I needed to make it to spring. Wishing you joyful birding! My fave is the male wood duck ... but I've never had the good fortune to see a harlequin in the wild.

Dagmar - good luck with the house sale! It sounds like a springboard to a lot of things in life that you've been patiently waiting for. It's your turn - I know it!

Hoping for a mellow week. I am working on wedging real exercise into my schedule, finally, so it would be helpful if there were no upsets while I get some new habits established.

Good morning all!

Like the rest of you I am ready for spring to break! I've had enough of freezing my butt day after day and dreading walks with the dogs rather then enjoying them!

Dagmar, I can totally understand feeling a bit melancholy about selling the home. But I am sooooo excited for you too! There is no feeling like owning your own house for the first time! And I can't wait to see the doggie you get!!

I wanted to carry over what Chris posted yesterday from last weeks's thread:

When after striving I lose weight or maintain an ideal weight I do feel relief and a certain satisfaction course, but my successes and strivings are not really where I find true happiness! So I hope something nice, like watching a mindless football game with friends or family, comes along today for all of us, where we all can just enjoy this moment.
This hit me like a hammer between the eyes when I read it yesterday Chris and I want to so thank you for it! My weight has been well controlled and I decided that while watching the Superbowl I was going to eat food that I normally forbid myself, so I bought some pizza and wings from Walmart.

I then ran 9 miles on the treadmill yesterday and afterwards started doubting my plan to eat the pizza and began engaging in the internal debate with myself which almost always ends with me berating myself with words like "fat pig".

I then read this and was able to completely change my thinking - my weight does not define my happiness and one day of being naughty is ok - really it is. I watched the game, enjoyed the pizza and wings, and am actually only up less then 2 pounds this morning from where I was yesterday morning.

Being thin is a wonderful new adventure for me, but I still want to love food and throw caution to the wind at times!

Went to church yesterday AM and watched the Super Bowl in the afternoon. I was sorry to see SF lose but proud of them just the same, it is an outstanding achievement to make it to the Super Bowl.I just got aa cold chill when the Sandy Hook children sang and Jennifer Hudson was wonderful singing with them. I don't pay a lot of attention to the ads but I loved the one "And God Made Farmers" for Dodge Ram.
Oh, yes my weight moved upwards, too by 1.4 pounds.

Oh, yes, the Ram commercial was a sure winner. Anything that makes me cry, I guess.

We had a nice weekend. Saturday morning was filled with errands here and there and then some fish tacos for lunch before heading out for golf. A light dinner afterward. Sunday started with golf and ended with the Superbowl and a light dinner. Dinner both nights was soup--tomato bisque Saturday and broccoli cheese on Sunday. Yum. I'd say the soup was good for the cool weather but we were up in the high 70's both days! Cloudy but warm.

Back to work today and we start packing and moving this week. Most of the repairs have been completed and the alarm guy is working on the alarm and wiring for phones and computers this week. After that, it'll be up to us to get all moved in. Today we get our trash bins. How exciting!

With it being Monday, we also start on our diet again. Although I've been watching what I've been eating and doing quite well on it, I really need to dedicate myself from here on until my birthday. I'd really like to see 10 pounds (or more, if possible) off by then.

So I've been using My Fitness Pal for tracking food and exercise. It recommended that I eat 1400 calories a day to lose about 1/2 a pound a week, but when you add your exercise in, it adjusts the calories so you're allowed to eat a few more calories. I don't know if I agree with it completely, so I'll continue to strive for 1400.

Bill, do you ever take photos of the birds? I'd love to see some. This time of year my favorite thing to see in our yard is big fat robins. There have been a bunch of them perched on the railing of our little deck or in our crabapple tree, and they look so funny and adorable when they puff themselves up to stay warm!

Dagmar, good luck with selling the house! DH likes to say when people worry about not being able to sell a house, that any house will sell if you offer the right price. If it's not selling after a while, I'm sure your realtors will adjust the price accordingly until it does. And I totally understand wanting the house and dog. We bought a house when we did mostly because I really wanted a dog!

Becky, winter is much better when you have a vacation somewhere warm planned. We're not going anywhere this year, but I like to schedule trips to visit my parents in LA for the end of Feb/beginning of March. It's miserable here that time of year but absolutely gorgeous in LA.

Cherry, I'm glad you managed to overcome your internal debate and enjoy your evening!

Saef, to pull forward from last week's thread, I hope you managed to find something to take pleasure in this weekend. I have to admit, as a non-religious person, that the whole "striving and then you die" thing has never bothered me. Since I don't believe in an afterlife, I try to enjoy the things I have in this life. Sure, sometimes it's hard and sometimes I get in a funk, but if you add up all the great little things, I think it's worth it. If you're still feeling down, maybe a call to your therapist might help?

Megan, to answer your question from last week, it's pretty much doctor's orders. Everything is healthy so far but like Andrea said, the risks for preterm labor with twins are higher so they are more cautious. I'm approved for walking and prenatal yoga, and I'm not supposed to start anything else without getting doctor approval first. I'm pretty sure they'd okay something like water aerobics, but that's about it. The general rule is to not do anything too strenuous, and if whatever I do makes anything hurt, stop immediately. Mentally, it's frustrating, but on the other hand, I'm not really physically capable of doing much at the moment.

I did make it to prenatal yoga yesterday after missing the past few weeks because of my lingering cold. Being around other pregnant women is kind of hilarious for me because my belly is about the same size as the women who are due next month, except that I've got almost five months to go.

We watched part of the super bowl last night, then went to sleep early. DH is a little disappointed that he missed the best parts of the game, but he says he'd rather be well-rested this morning and watch the highlight reels than have stayed up late and been exhausted today.

In other news, there might be a leak in our master bathroom somewhere. DH has all these plans about cutting open the drywall to find out what's wrong. I am kind of like, why don't we just hire someone to do this for us? I mean, I get that DH is trying to save money, but as much as I love him, he's really not much of a handyman.

At Super Bowl family gathering I enjoyed chicken nachos, chicken wings, brownies, sour cream apple pie, ice cream, beef nachos, puffed pastry olive/cheese things, various cheesy dips, etc. Today and for the rest of this week I will enjoy enjoy weighing, measuring, etc. After an evening like last night I find myself actually craving kale, brussel sprouts, cauliflower, salad, etc!

Since I don't follow football at all, I didn't even know until this morning which teams had even played in the Superbowl.

I went to the gym yesterday, then to Manhattan, where I watched two movies in a row at the same theater: a documentary film about a Palestinian farmer & his family living on the Gaza Strip, "Five Broken Cameras," and also "A Royal Affair," an 18th century costume drama set in Denmark, about a love triangle between adulterous queen, an insane king and a German doctor influenced by the Enlightenment. Both of those are Academy Award nominees, and so yes, I'm continuing my "game" of trying to see nearly all the nominees.

My weekend was overshadowed by worries about the coming work week. This is when "being in the moment" would be a big help. I try to remind myself of that on occasion: Just do what you're doing, don't think about all the things you still have to do and haven't gotten to yet.

Honestly I don't know what I want. Well, physical safety, for one thing. (And the zoning board votes on the flood wall in two weeks.) Peace of mind.

We had a fantastic weekend (except for my lingering cold which is finally 80% gone). Dh and I thoroughly enjoyed our little getaway to Napa to celebrate his 50th birthday. Way too much food (and wine for him) and I'm up 4 pounds today (we were only gone 24 hours roughly!!). Back to the grindstone.....

My dh got a very strange gift from his parents. They shipped it to us and I had a note from FedEx that I had to pick it up in person (since I wasn't home when they tried to deliver). It said someone over 21 had to sign so I assumed it was wine. The box was VERY large and oblong. I had taken the mini cooper to pick it up and it was quite a fiasco trying to fit it in the car. Father in law said we would never guess what was inside. We sure wouldn't have. When dh finally opened it yesterday, we found an antique (very large) rifle inside. Dh remembered it from his childhood--- it had been his grandfather's grandfather's gun. Very interesting but not sure what we're going to do with it. Dh wants to put it over the fireplace! I had my girls play 20 questions to guess what it was and dd guessed a gun after about 5 guesses-- I have no idea how she figured it out!

We loved the Super Bowl but we were bummed that SF lost. My favorite commercial was the one in the library!!

Hope everyone has a great (and somewhat warm) week!

The best ad IMO was the PSY nuts ad! Beating a dead horse.

Starting this week 3.8 lb up from my Friday WI. Key West this Friday! I can't wait to eat fish and fruit. Key Lime pie is a fruit, right?

I placed a ridiculously expensive order for some "sumo" citrus fruits from Harry & David. "Sumo" are "dekopon" in Japan and I LIVED for dekopon season all three years I lived there - I would drop $6 per fruit when they started dropping out of stores. Oh well. Some people have a family or nice handbags, I have...fruit.

Krampus, about the fruit. Any fruit pie is considered fruit in my mind.

Bill, we have a great park where I live that has a lot of waterfowl, including harlequin ducks. In the fall especially, people are in the park taking photos of all the birds. It's the most popular spot to take family photos for Christmas cards. The other parks have Canada geese--so many geese that they're trying a program where people can let their dogs loose to chase them. Geese droppings foul lots of parks and business campuses, noticed them even at my church yesterday.

Dagmar, good luck with the house sale. We sold my family home about 8 years ago. We purchased it new in 1957--watched it being built from our home across the street. It can be a bit sad, but you can really look forward to getting something that you choose. I'm excited for you!

Saef. I hope today is going well. Peace of mind is always a good goal. Living in the moment is hard. I know my mind tends to wander to the future or past. My meditation mantra should be "Be here now."

Chris, Superbowl food porn! Luckily, only one day.

We really weren't intending to watch the Superbowl, but ended up watching a bit of the 2nd quarter and then the rest of it. My favorite ad was the Tide commercial. I didn't have a stake in the game, however, we decided to root for the Ravens because my DH is from Maryland and because we have friends who are Ravens fans. The last part of the 4th quarter was quite a nailbiter. Did anyone catch Flacco's little language slip after the game was over? He wasn't facing the camera so I'm sure he didn't know he was being recorded. Nice to know he thought winning was "f***ing awesome!"

Most of Sunday was spent doing little things to the house to get it ready to sell in the spring. We changed out two old light fixtures, using ones we got from Home Depot. When we got almost to the end of putting the first one up, we discovered a missing part. My DH went back to HD, and had the associate make sure the missing part was in the new box. I got ready to install the second light, and decide to count all the parts. That box was missing the grounding screw. Aarrgghh! DH went back to HD, and said "my wife said you guys should give us this light for free because of all the trips I've had to make." They gave him 50% off instead of free. Moral: always check through the box fto make sure everything is in there before you leave the store.

On the subject of fowl, I do love some birds! The snowy egrets and herons at the golf course are so interesting to watch as they fly so beautifully. There is another white bird, much smaller than the egret, as well. But then there are the Canada geese, coots and some sort of duck (not mallards which used to congregate on the course) that are more of a nuisance. Poop everywhere! And then they take off en masse and you wonder if you'll be "bombed."

Krampus~what is the difference between the dekupon and a tangelo? They look very similar except perhaps the size?

Dagmar~good luck with the sale of the house. I wonder if my kids ever feel homesick for our first house (I know I don't!). My Dad still has my childhood house and I wonder how I'll feel when we need to sell it.

I found out yesterday that my sister and BIL are going to SLC in a few weeks (when my brother and SIL return from Japan) and the four of them are going to "rearrange" my Dad's house. Essentially they'll be moving his stuff from the basement upstairs to the two spare bedrooms and then moving the beds down to the downstairs bedrooms. My niece and her friend are going to live there this summer while on break from the University, so it'll be their place of respite.

I can't wait to visit FL and see southeastern fowl for the first time - I hope I see a roseate spoonbill though I'm sure I won't.

alinnell, I think (according to Wikipedia) Dekopon are hybrids of two specific also-hybrid citrus fruits, "kiyomi" and "ponkan." Tangelos are tangerines and pomelos and are bigger.

I totally caught that. Another player also said something not as severe that I heard too-- can't remember now-- but I wondered how many youngsters heard their idols swearing-- quite a shame actually.
