White Wine Vinegar
At the risk of repeating topics from the past, I wanted to check in on vinegars. I see some recipes using white wine vinegar. My coach says only rice wine, white distilled vinegar or apple cider vinegar -- no red or white wine vinegar. What do you all do?

The Ideal Protein phase 1 sheet states that you can have apple cider vinegar or white vinegar. It also states NO balsamic or redwine vinegar. Anything else that's not listed on the sheet must be zero carbs, zero fat and zero sugar. White wine vinegar fits that so it is allowed. I have white wine vinegar all the time.

I thought we had to look at the PH / Alkaline balance of them too? That was the reason I was told (besides the sugars) ?

I use white wine and champagne vinegar often without any ill effects, but of course, everyone is different.

As with anything, use your best judgement when it comes to things that are not on the sheet - someone mentioned the alkalinity and that is dead on - wine vinegars tend to be acid forming while apple cider vinegar is alkaline forming. The stuff that is "approved" on phase 1 lean towards the alkaline group.
I've mentioned it before, what is and is not allowed according to the sheet goes beyond the carb and calorie count - I would just encourage folks to do thorough research before deciding to go off-book.

Thanks everyone!! And scorbett, I agree about going off list even for 0/0/0. Given even that legally things with limited calories can be listed as 0, it would be easy to go way OP and not know it. I want to lose and wrap this phase up as quickly as possible!!

That's pretty much how I feel too Sure I could make allowances all over the place (it's easy enough to say "yes"!) but I want to move on to Maintenance as soon as possible. I've managed to find enough substitutions that are 100% on plan that I've survived the last 25 weeks. Someone else said it in another thread - if I could stay away from my beloved wine for pregnancy and breastfeeding with both my kids, I can definitely stick to plan for the short period of this diet!

Agreed! I only use apple cider, rice wine and plain old distilled.

Just wanted to chime in with some info from the official IP site:
"Both rice wine vinegar and white wine vinegar are allowed on the program, as they have a low carb content. Red wine vinegar and balsamic are not. Apple cider, distilled white and rice vinegar are also fine."
PHEW! I love white wine vinegar (a little less "astringent" to my palette).

I like your analogy about staying away from wine during pregnancy. I'm always amazed by people who comment on my weight loss, ask all about IP and then when they find out they can't drink alcohol, even wine, they say they could never do that! Is wine that essential to their happiness? Then perhaps they have more of a problem than just their weight.
The other day when I was over at my son's in-laws for halloween dinner and having my usual fizzy water with lime while they had wine, they said that after this diet I'll have to really ease into going back to drinking wine since I haven't had any for so long. I just laughed and said, how much wine do you think I drank? I had an occasional glass and one a week at their house because I had to drive anyway.
On the other hand, an old boyfriend - I just call him my 'fling' now - is coming to visit and we tend to booze it up when he visits - mainly rum or scotch. I will have to just refrain and it will definitely affect my fun factor. Oh well, time to get rid of that 'fling' anyway.

I read the sheet and it doesn't say no white wine vinegar so I read label, it says 0/0/0 so I used it more then once that week and I didn't have an issue at all.
