Default Anybody read the Diet 101 book by Jenny Ruhl?

I just started reading this book and I'm finding it rather eye-opening. It addresses issues with low-carb diets and how much true fat-loss can be expected during that initial drop of weight.

Haven't gotten past the second chapter yet. Just wondering if anybody else has read it and what you think about it. The author also wrote Blood Sugar 101 and runs the website of the same name. I found the website very informative as I was trying to learn more about dealing with diabetes.

Under $10 on the Kindle. I read quite a bit of it yesterday. Trouble-shoots the issues with low-carb diets. Basically, that's my diet forever since I'm type 2 and PCOS, but I keep falling off the wagon and I struggle to be consistent. Consistency is not one of my strengths, but as a result of reading this book, I'm finding more value in it.

Hi Geo, I recently listened to a podcast on the Jimmy Moore show with Jenny on it. Nice lady, very intelligent and helpful show.

Georgia - When I realized this was you who posted this and after reading what you shared about this book and since I seek some of the same answers you do, I went to her website and printed out some of the info to read because I wanted to see what she had to say before I purchase yet another book. I was impressed enough to order the book... hope to have it by the end of the week. It really helps to read why certain things work and how which I believe the new book must explain according to the reviews on Amazon. I worked for a few weeks for a man who owned a health food store and I've never forgot the day I was doing some filing in the office when he turned to me and said, "Remember this one thing. There isn't anything that cannot be reversed if we only knew how to do it". So I'm very interested to see what else she has to share in the book as I'm more intested in reversing diabaetes rather than just "slowing down" possible damaging. Thank you.

I too hope this isn't just a dream, the idea of reversing the diabetes. Even when I'm overweight and 51 and there is no solid research to support that i can happen. I want to believe! It's why we're still plugging away at it.

I agree 100%. At the least I hope for a better quality of life than I would have otherwise.

I was on Dr. Bernstein's forum this week, nosing around. Talk about information overload!

I've been really concerned with the amount of protein I've been eating lately. When I cut carbs, I always over-compensate on protein. But then I was reading (can't recall where) that eating over 37 gm of protein at a meal had a glycemic effect, which explained to me why my protein-heavy meals were popping my blood sugar up in the early mornings.

Diet 101 has a link to an online ketogenic calculator, but it doesn't help break things down by meals. Dr. Bernstein suggests a 6gm carb breakfast, 12gm carb lunch, 12gm carb dinner. And then I found a rule of thumb from the Dr. B forum that said the following:

Quote:
Without carbs, you need (at a minimum) half as many fat grams as protein grams. For each gram of carb you then add, you need 2 grams of fat to balance it.
So that's what I started doing this morning, hoping to manage protein portions better and find the truly ketogenic diet. I'm shooting for three meals a day plus an afternoon snack.

There's so much more math on the forum, but I don't have time for all that! I am grateful to those who do the math for me!
