Try overnight oatmeal... technically the oats remain raw when you eat them because instead of cooking them you soften them by soaking them overnight in milk. Use roughly equal amounts of oats and milk or milk substitutes (adjust if there's not enough milk to fully soak all of the oats). Add about a tablespoon of ground chia seeds or flax seeds to thicken it, plus whatever sweeteners, nuts, and fruit that you like. Refrigerate it overnight and it'll be delicious!
And oats and honey? Do you mix the two together and bake it (granola style?)?
Yep, you could do that! Maybe add some cinnamon to that as well for a bit of a kick... I've really only had oats, yogurt, and honey, never just oats and honey, but baking it sounds like a great idea... It would be really fun to experiment with!
I only recently discovered them. I grew up eating cooked oatmeal loaded with butter and sugar and topped with brown sugar Now I eat them raw, with almond milk and a sliced banana - and no added sugar.
Stunzorz, what a great suggestion! I'll grind some in my blender before I make a smoothie and I'll bet it will make it more filling.
I LOVE overnight-soaked oats in almond milk! Definitely add some cinnamon or other spices for a bit of flavor (and to make it more satisfying).
If you add a little dried fruit, the fruit rehydrates overnight and becomes a bit different, for some novelty. Or nuts (almonds and cashews especially) become nice and soft, if you want something other than cream/butter to add fats.
For a softer (but not quite soft) instant "normal" oatmeal, just heat water and dump it into the oats. That's all instant oatmeal is, after all.
My favorite thing to do is bake pie crusts with raw oats -- oats, whole wheat flour, a little almond milk, all mixed together and mushed into a pan. Bake for ~15 minutes at 350, add filling of fresh fruit, and keep baking for another ~15 minutes -- beautiful whole food fruit tart!
