Ok, my husband works all day and i don't have anyone else to watch my 2 1/2 year old son(my 6 year old is in school during the day). I would like to start running though. Is running in place the same as normal running? (Well obviously apart from the fact that you aren't going anywhere if you're running in place haha. ) I would love to get a treadmill but that's just not possible right now.
No, it is nowhere near the same - you aren't pushing off, you arent resisting anything. You aren't even rolling your foot the same. You can 'run' in place a lot longer and farther than real running because of all of that.
Now, is it exercise? Sure, but why not get a video so you don't get bored to tears running in place? Getting a video will make you stronger and build up muscles so that when you are ready to actually go running you'll be more fit and ready for it outdoors.

It may not be the same, but that is how my running started. So it was winter and I stared running in place in my living room and by the time spring came , I started 5k to couch program I was a lot more able to do the times that they ask as to do... so go head and star doing it will help you on the future.
Definitely not the same, but if you have the motivation and don't find yourself getting bored go for it. When I do a workout video and they say jog in place, I run around my apartment instead.
But if your keen on running in place, while you run switch up to butt kicks, high knees, jumping jacks and back into running in place.
