Calorie counting can help you to give a general idea about your average daily intake. It can help you notice any pitfalls, high calorie snacks. It could also tell you if you're consuming too few calories, which could ultimately lead to a binge. I used to have MyFitnessPal. It's a good app. You just type in the foods and it calculates the calories.
I don't find counting calories difficult. It's easy for me. I hate mathematics but it's just a numbers game. Good luck!
