I answered on your other thread already but honestly for many exercises you just need your body weight. Squats/lunges/pushups are all great body weight exercises but if they start getting easy you can start adding hand weights. Before I joined a gym I would just buy hand weights as needed. I don't think there's any need for resistance bands, handweights are already a good start.
Bodyweight is good as a starting place, but I think I'd look into resistance bands rather than dumbbells. The idea with strength training is to gain strength, and in the beginning, usually pretty quickly. I think you get more mileage out of resistance bands. After the first couple of weeks, you're not going to have any need for 10lb dumbbells!

That's a good point but you can actually buy dumbbells that adjust in weight for instance: http://www.amazon.com/US-Weight-105-.../dp/B0041G3ZK6 (if you google them there are cheaper ones but I just wanted to show an example).
I had some similar to this years ago and it was great because I used different weights for different exercises.
