Default Can I ask my doctor for diet pills?

I'm 17 years old going into 18 in April. I'm morbidly obese (obviously) and I need a little help with losing weight and I heard Phentermine is great. Should I ask him about this? I'm going to the doctors in about 2-3 hours. I'm just a little worried that I may be too young for this.

I have never heard of doctors prescribing diet pills, and even if they did, you'd have to be eighteen. So you definitely wouldn't get them now.

Honestly, as hard as this is to hear, there are no short cuts to weight loss. All you can do is make better choices for you body - and putting in synthetic chemicals that could potentially mess with your heart and other critical functions is decidedly not good for your body.

Edit: Besides, most of these pills are just appetite suppressants. I don't know if this is an issue with you, but many obese and morbidly obese people have other issues that have contributed significantly to obesity, such as binge behaviors and the tendency to use food for emotional comfort. If anything like that applies to you, an appetite suppressant wouldn't help, anyway.

I meant Adipex. Just a second ago, I read that you must be 16 year old or older. I was actually hoping for someone my age who did asked their doctor and I wanted to see how it went.

You shouldn't consider diet pills at any age. They have been linked to early death, heart disease. You need to make choices, there is no motivation or will power involved. You either chose to eat the foods in the quantites that will meat your weight loss goal or you chose food is more important than your goal.

It's better to ask for help to lose weight by healthier methods. Your doctor can refer you to a nutritionist or a weight loss support group.

I strongly believe that obesity is merely a physical symptom and that to change your body you have to change your mind.

Phentermine is very addictive, it is only effective for about 3 months and a huge % of people who use it gain the weight back after using it. Your best bet is to analyze why you overeat and try to get a handle on it, increase your activity and eat more fruits and veggies...Whoever stated there is no magic pill is correct. There is only lifestyle changes, and support groups like 3 Fat Chicks. Good Luck

I took diet pills in high school and the only that occurred was that I experienced heart palpitations. I remember being overweight in high school and it is extremely difficult. I am here to tell you that it gets better.

CaramelKitty- One reason I like my doctor is because he himself is overweight so he is very sensitive toward others. Find a fat doctor. LoL.
And I noticed that you changed your avatar which is a beautiful pic.

Most doctors have less training in diet and nutrition then the average dieter, you are better off taking advice from a registered dietitian or reading these forums. Ask your doc for a referral to a dietitian and check and make sure it is covered by your insurance.
