How terrifying!
There is a somewhat predictable process to trauma recovery and right now he's in the crisis phase. Everything you're describing is normal. It's actually good that he's processing it, but it's a scary process.
Encourage him to seek a good trauma counsellor! If finding a professional to work with him isn't an option, looking at info for catastrophe survivors might help. 9-11 or veterans, that sort of thing. Google "trauama recovery self help" and encourage him to read.
Anti anxiety methods (deep breathing, lots of self care, living a healthy lifestyle) will all help. Trauma recovery is a process that takes time, but he'll be OK. If you need more help, feel free to PM me and I'll do what I can.
