Angry Help! Im stuck! and frustrated! Not getting anywhere.

Okay, i am so frustrated. I have been on South Beach 3 times in my life. The first time i was on it..i died..cause i couldnt get past the first week..The second time, i was on it , i was monitored by an endocrinologist and she gave me an anti-diabetic medication called Glumetza to help me balance my blood sugars so i would stop eating so much to try and balance them myself..So it worked.. I went to the gym and worked out every day for like..2.5 hours a day and that included running, swimming, biking and weights..I lived off of protein shakes for the afternoons because i worked a job that was physically demanding and i needed something fast to keep me going at the gym..I followed the diet religiously and aside from protein powder, i lived off of cottage cheese and tomato and eggs for breaky..and beans..and i lost about 20 pounds in less than a month...But then of course, i met a guy, fell in love and he had really really bad eating habits..aka..sugary candy..and i being very emotional and wanting to do what others did, ate what he ate..and gained it all back plus more and abandoned my gym time in the evening to spend time with him..

So now..im back on South Beach..its day 7 of phase 1..The first 4 days when i unknowingly cheated by eating sugar free fat free pudding, i lost 5.6 pounds..but now i have gone up a pound.. I was at 187 and then i went up to 188 and now its 188.7.. But what i dont get is...why am i going up when i should be going down? Since i found out that pudding on phase 1 was a no no..i got rid of it..all of it ..threw all the packages out..then i realized that coolwhip(sigh) was also not allowed..because it wasnt coolwhip free.. so now ive thrown that out..and yes.. i even had to get rid of what i thought was safe sugar free fat free yougurt that was vanilla..cause it wasnt plain..so thats gone too..

But why am i gaining? Is it because im not exercising? I admit to being a couch addict. I am a mom to a 6 month old baby girl. I live in a rainforest climate out here in Canada.. it rains every single day..even on the sunny days..we are lucky if we get through a week without rain...let alone 2 days.. I cant get out to the gym during the day because my husband works during the day , doesnt make it home till 5 pm..there is no child minding at the gym. You cant bring your child to the gym with you either. My baby girl is in bed at 7pm every night..so in order to go to the gym, my hunny has to watch her..but of course i havent gotten my 50$ monthly membership yet..Which i need to do desperately, because i too, before becomming pregnant and becomming a couch addict, was once a treadmill potato instead.

Is it because im not exercising? Do you have to exercise? Should i be sticking to just cottage cheese and tomato instead of trying out all these other recipes like the no flour, flaxseed foccacia bread phase 1? and the flaxseed muffin?

I see all these people in phase 1 claiming boredom or dying of overconsumption of cheese and eggs..but cant you lose weight eating flax and other recipes for phase 1???

Hey PHG! First of all, didn't you mention that it was your TOM? We tend to retain water during that time and most of us gain a little bit. Post a sample of your daily menus so we can take a look and see if anything needs tweaked. Are you getting 1/2 cup of beans daily? 4-6 (1/2 cup) servings of Ph1 veggies a day? 8-10 (8 oz) cups of water daily?

I have done SB more than once myself. In my own experience, the weight doesn't come off as fast as that first time. Also, for many, those 2 weeks of PH1 are not a huge loss but important to get rid of the cravings. IMO if you have an initial water loss, you will then either plateau or maybe see what looks like a gain as your body adjusts to actual loss. This may be what is happening to you. Over 5 pounds in one week is a lot!

True confession - I eat SF pudding in PH1, every time but the first time. It does not cause cravings or slow my loss. But that is just me. I am not recommending it; just sharing.

However, I did find that I lost more when I did not eat what I will call "bready substitutes." For me that is stuff like the PH1 muffins. I think it is because I tend to overeat those and they have more calories. I know this is not about counting calories and I don't, but the reality is calories so make a difference. BTW - I hardly ever eat eggs on PH1. Got egg overload. My breakfast for ages now has been beans.

As for exercise, sure, it helps. That whole calorie math again. But I have heard many experts say that weight loss is 80% diet and only 20% exercise.

My bottom-line, be patient. Losing weight takes time. Truly changing habits takes time. And measure... you may see inches lost when you don't see pounds. Hang in there.

At the risk of sounding unsympathetic (for which I apologize), from what you describe you did not really do South Beach before. Eating cottage cheese, eggs, tomatoes and protein shakes is NOT doing the South Beach Diet as it is laid out in the book.

I don't know if you have the book at home, but I think you should read it fully and gain a better understanding of how to do this diet and the benefits of doing it. You are frustrated with it but from your posts I sense that for some reason there are several aspects of it that still aren't clear to you. If you do the diet (or lifestyle change) as described in the book, you will lose weight. Some weeks you may go up because of TOM or other water retention, but overall you will be on a losing path.

Sorry if this sounds harsh. I wish you luck and hope that you find your path with this or perhaps another diet that you feel will work better for you.

Why not pick a different plan that offers more variety of foods like calorie counting or weight watchers? something you can stick with for the rest of your life.

I really don't want you to be frustrated, PHG. Let me see if I can post a sample Ph1 menu, for me. I'm vegetarian, but it gives you an idea anyway.

B: Spinach and Broccoli crustless quiche cups (2,) 8oz low sodium Hot & Spicy V8, green tea
S: Light Laughing Cow Cheese wedge spread on celery sticks
L: Taco Salad - made with 1/2 cup fake meat crumbles seasoned with cumin or chili powder (could use chicken,) lettuce, tomatoes, red or green bell peppers, jalapenos, green onions, low-fat cheese, 2 T. low-fat sour cream
S: 1/4 cup soy nuts (or 15 almonds, or 20 peanuts, etc.)
D: Mexican Lentil Stew - made with lentils, onions, fire-roasted tomatoes, celery, garlic, and seasonings, salad with 1/4 cup low-fat cottage cheese and 1-2 T. low-fat dressing.
S: Sugar-free fudgesicle

I don't even weigh during TOM. I know we all would love the excess weight to all come off overnight, but it's not how it got there.

Mmc brought up a point about the book. Perhaps by going back through it you could decide if it was the type of lifestyle change you are interested in making. I chose SBD because I wanted to get healthier as well as losing weight.

I would second Zeffryn's idea about patience. Daily fluxuations don't accurately represent the downward trend.

Best wishes

All of the suggestions and explanations here are right on target. That being said - I really really understand where you are coming from.

I've been OP for 5 weeks now, and in Phase II I'm (for the most part) doing a better job getting in my veggies and watching portions and calories. I lost about 8 pounds in Phase I, and in the last 3 weeks I've lost none. (In fact, my status of 161 has been at 162 for 2 full weeks now).

Who knows why this is, but I've been making a choice everyday to stay with it because I know that how I'm treating my body is a million times better than what it was before. I also know that if that damn scale doesn't move soon I may have to try something else. Go back to Phase I or switch over to WW for a time, or make a new choice.

I guess my point is that you are in control. This is your choice to make. As much as I whine and complain I try to remember that I can choose to be healthy or I can choose to be unhealthy, but I have to live with the consequences of my decision. Which I hate, but which is also true.

Amy, I used to put my scale in time out all the time because it wasn't behaving properly. It was a running joke over here.

Thank you for the suggestion, however, i have tried Weight Watchers, Slimfast, The Zone, The Medeterrainian diet, Atkins and calorie counting.

The reason why i am on South Beach is not just to lose weight. Im on it, because i am a type 2 diabetic and i desperately need to balance out my sugars and lose a huge amount of weight, or else im going to run into some even more serious health issues. I chose this plan because it was reccomended by an endocrinologist-a specialist in womens health and blood sugar issues.. She put me on it wth medication as welll..

I know its a lifestyle, problem is..ive never gotten past phase 1 to begin with..problem with not getting past it, is because i have always worried that going to phase 2 will make me go off board altogether because fruit causes huge issues for me..not only does in make my blood sugar go wonky, it also causes severe cravings for me..fruit and bread are my two worst triggers..so to go on to phase 2 makes me concerned that im going to go backwards because its going to affect my overall health.

PHG - A lot of us do a "Phase 1.5" for the same reason, limiting the amount of fruits and grains we add to our diet. Grains are my craving-starter, and I definitely can't have them with every meal. I usually have whole wheat crackers with my morning snack. Otherwise I don't usually eat a lot of grains or fruits during the day. Occasionally DF will make brown rice and vegetables and I'll have a small serving with dinner, or whole wheat spaghetti or something. (I also get the craving this time of year for a grilled cheese - I make with 2 slices low-calorie whole wheat bread, 2 slices low-fat American cheese, and I Can't Believe It's Not Butter Spray.)

You'll get it! Go back through the book, go through our recipe forums (TONS of awesome ideas there!!!!) and keep posting here! This site is what's kept me going for so long, and these girls have become my friends. They're here to listen, offer guidance, socialize, or give a swift kick in the (which I have needed a LOT over the last 6.5 years!!!!)

Just don't stress. It all takes time.

If you know that fruit makes your blood sugar go crazy and causes cravings, you've answered your own question. Don't have fruit in Phase 2 or any other time until you test out and see if you can find a fruit that does not do that. Same with bread. There are other whole grains out there to eat.

The endo recommended SBD because it really is a very good diet for stabilizing your blood sugar. Having her recommend it does not mean you know exactly how to do it because she told you to do it. You need to get the book and read it and really understand what it is all about. I may be wrong but I don't think you've ever said that you have done that.

You need to get through Phase 1 before you start worrying about Phase 2. You said you've never made it through a clean Phase 1 because you are afraid of Phase 2. I don't know if anyone can help you with that. Again, if you read the book Phase 2 will be much de-mystified and less intimidating.
