Heart rate monitor and calories burned...
First off, I wanted to thank everyone for your comments in my running thread. Today I noticed that I didn't feel like dying until 1 minute into my last 2 minute run - so maybe someday I'm going to be able to run a *real* amount of time!
Now if anyone here has a heart rate monitor I would appreciate some input. One of my Xmas presents from my DH was a heart rate monitor. It has a strap that attaches around my chest and then you wear a watch that tells you heart rate, calories burned and all kinds of other things that I haven't had a chance to play with yet.
My treadmill tells me how many calories I have burned when I input my weight. My heart rate monitor also allows me to input my age, weight, sex and height and tells me how many calories I've burned. I know these things aren't an exact science so I knew they wouldn't match exactly. However, at the end of my workout, the treadmill said I burned 390 calories, and my heart rate monitor said 172!! Holy crap - what a huge difference! Thoughts?

Unfortunately I'd say that the heart rate monitor is more accurate. Machines are just an estimate and it doesn't know any of your stats. It would say 390 for any person who ran at the same pace for the same amount of time. Try to look at it as motivation to work harder.

Hmmmm. From my experience with my HRM, I burn about 100 calories per 15 mins.
So, your HRM reading of 172 seems low to me, but the treadmill counter seems closer. How frustrating!!!
I decided to quit using my HRM because I was just obsessing over numbers that probably aren't very accurate anyway.

Well today I did the Zumba "cardio party" DVD (45 minutes) and it said that I burned 180 calories. Geez, here I was thinking all this stuff I was doing was burning a lot more calories...

Are you sure that the HRM is functioning correctly? Those numbers sound really low to me. I use a Bodybugg to track my calorie output and when I was closer to your size my numbers were MUCH higher.

Well, I have in all my information and double checked to make sure that is correct (Age, weight, height, etc). And it seems to be getting my heart rate correctly - yesterday my highest heart rate was 157 and my average HR was 129.

I agree with the posters above.
The number on your HRM seems too low for those workouts.
Try reset-ing and see what happens.

Ok, this is fascinating. Today I re-read the instructions. It said to thoroughly wet the chest strap so the readings can be the most accurate. The last 2 days, I have not wet the strap, because it seemed to be reading my heart rate, fine. But since the calories burned was low, I wondered if maybe it wasn't making enough contact, so I wet down the strap today and then did the same treadmill workout that I did 2 days ago.
At the end of the workout the treadmill said that I burned 396 calories. The heart rate monitor said that I burned 624 calories! 2 days ago I was hating my new heart monitor. Today I love it LOL...

Haha. I was going to ask you about that, but I thought you probably already knew about wetting the contacts.
Yay, I'm glad you figured it out

No, I'm one of those idiots that half-assed reads directions and starts trying things before really knowing what I'm doing.... Bad me! Honestly, I didn't think it would make this much difference!

So WEIRD!!! I got a heart rate monitor and it is telling me I am burning like 2000 calories during a 1 hour walk/run and 30 min weight training. CRAZY!
