Default Bamboo Cutting Board

I bought what I thought was a pretty nice bamboo cutting board at TJ Maxx on Saturday. I have used it once and ran it through the dishwasher for sterilization purposes. I don't think the dishwasher caused this, but it has some fibers sticking out of it in places, almost like little splinters. Should I sand it with a fine sandpaper? I do not want to get those fibers in my food.

Thanks for any input!

Yes, sand it down and rub some food grade mineral oil on it. Wood cutting boards should be sanded and oiled before use and then monthly, to get rid of knife grooves where bacteria can fester. After you sand and oil it, you shouldn't notice any more splintering, if it's of decent quality.

I've never looked at the drugstore, we bought a bottle at Menards, in the kitchen aisle. You can likely get it at any box store, it would be near the cutting boards.

i bought 2 wooden cutting boards from a guy who hand makes them..... he told me to use vegetable oil regularly, also i don't cut any meat on them, i only use them for fruit and veggies, i don't put them in the dishwasher either.

vegetable oil is working great

The only problem with vegetable oil, in my opinion, is that it goes rancid after a while. Since I have very nice cutting boards that I've had for years and plan to have for many more, I use mineral oil.

I would suggest not putting a wood board in the dishwasher as it can cause warping, and soap can get stuck in the wood.

Good advice, thanks! So I should use my old plastic one for meats and run it through the dishwasher? That is what I have always done. I'll save the bamboo one for less "dirty" cutting.

I'd suggest plastic for meat, since you can disinfect it in a solution of bleach and water occasionally, and toss it in the dishwasher after every use. I don't eat meat, but have a plastic board designated for meat (if people come over or DH gets a craving he can't control), a smaller wooden one designated for onions and garlic, and a huge wooden one for everything else.
