Default Raspberries Go Moldy

How do you keep you raspberries from going moldy? I check them good at the store, but then sometimes they turn moldy quicky, other times they last a week. I am thinking of putting them in a larger container when I get home. Let more air circulate around them.

I don't know....I can sure see how such a fragile fruit would mold quickly, though. I do know that you don't want to wash them until right before you eat them. Good luck!

maybe freeze asap? i guess i would just try to use them up that day or the next when you get back from the store. i noticed the same problem with strawberries. a few times i've gotten organic strawberries, they seemed to last longer. maybe you could get some at a farmer's market? they are the freshest.

Don't wash them until you are going to eat them.

I quit buying raspberries for that exact reason. They are WAY to expensive to waste (especially up here). I would recommend immediately freezing them. So delicious, but you have to eat them so darn fast!

Make sure there are no squishy ones (toss those), gently put into a glass jar along with a loosely crumbled paper towel. Twist lid on tight and store in fridge. The towel seems to absorb moisture that would lead to rot, and the sealed jar is just magic Works really well with strawberries. Replace paper towel if it feels damp.

I have done this except in a tupperware container. I had one where I could spread them out. The tupperware is air tight. i will let you know how it goes. I have them almost every morning.

I buy the smallest container and eat them all the same day or by the next morning, just because I haven't found a way to prevent the mold growth. Or I buy frozen.

Karen- if you can please try it with a glass jar- I think plastic like Tupperware gives a different result.

So far so good. I burped the air out the raspberries one day, but that is all. One data point a trend does not make. I will need to try this a few more times.

There was a NY Times article last year about how rinsing your berries with hot water reduces the mold spores on the surface and can help them last longer. I haven't done my own official test, but I've been rinsing my berries since then and it seems to be helping...or maybe I'm just eating my berries faster

I was going to suggest the sealing them in a container with a paper towel in it too. The towel absorbs the moisture and the container keeps air out.

Works great with fresh herbs too. Just wrap them in a paper towel and then put it all in a plastic baggie into the fridge.

Who has leftover raspberries? Not at these prices, in late November. The minute I'm alone with them, at home, in my kitchen, I WANT THEM. And I have to fight myself to keep from having my way with them immediately. They don't have even a minute to get moldy.

I grow raspberries.
As soon as I pick them, I wash and freeze them.
If I pick a lot of them. I wash and cook them down and make juice.
Berries mold fast, so I never keep them more than a day without cooking or freezing them.

Raspberry juice is very expensive. I add it to my blackberry juice to add flavor.
Sometimes I cook frozen raspberries, make the juice and add it to pear, peach, or grape juice.
Pear juice helps prevent dementia and altzheimers.
Blackberry juice is for the heart and blood vessels and also night vision.
Niagra grape juice gives you a lot of energy.
Wild grape juice strengthens the heart and capillaries.

My elderberries are made into an extract that knocks out colds and flu.
If your fringernails are thin or break easy, eating a few berries every day will make them all very strong and healthy.

I have a lot of fruit trees and berry bushes.
Berries are essential to ones health. But they are sooo expensive, it's best to grow your own.
I never make jams or desserts with the fruit...just juice.
