I bought a rutabaga the other day, and I have NO CLUE what to do with it. I've never eaten a turnip, rutabaga, or any other vegetable even close to it. I'd love any tips on how to cook it, or a recipe would be awesome!
My husbands mother is Finish and she always used to peal them, boil them for at least 40 minutes, rinse thoroughly, mash them and put some milk and some pepper, cinnamon and nutmeg.
Oh gosh, yes, peel them. Usually when I get one in the local grocery stores, it's been covered with wax to seal & protect it. After peeling, I chop it up into small pieces & I steam them. But you can also toss the pieces in a bit of olive oil, salt & pepper & roast them. It's a wonderfully sweet vegetable. Sort of yellowy looking. I'd rather eat a rutabaga than a potato.
I mash here. Cut into cubes, boil for ages (30? Sweetykins' husband's mother does 40 and it will def be ready then), mash with a little milk, a knob of butter and ground black pepper. Very good with pork.
