Thumbs up Chocolate Banana "Ice Cream"--Delish!

So, I'm a frugal gal. I buy bananas on sale and freeze what we can't/won't eat right away. I used to use them for banana bread. I don't make that much anymore but did think of a new recipe to use them in. I loved it and thought I'd share.

I have a 9 year old son with an interesting take on breakfast. Typical breakfast foods don't appeal to him so we get creative to put something in his belly most mornings. He wanted a smoothie yesterday so I checked the freezer for frozen fruit. We were all out except for bananas.

I usually throw a half a banana in his smooties with strawberry or blue berries. Yesterday what was supposed to be a smootie really was more like a soft serve dish of ice cream. It was an unexpected surprise and a special treat for him. He felt like he was having ice cream for breakfast. It was so healthy, that I had a dish too.

2- Frozen Bananas-cut into slices when still fresh and then frozen on a cookie sheet. (210 calories)

2 tablespoons dry powdered skim milk (30 calories)

1/2 cup ice cold skim milk (40 calories)

2 tablespoons Nestles chocolate syrup. (100 calories-yikes!)

1 cup crushed ice (0 of course)

380 Calories for 2 small servings or 1 large, O grams of fat, 8 grams of fiber. Plus all the good for you stuff in bananas.

-------

Put all in a food processer and pulse on high for about 30 seconds. Where a typical smoothie can be drank through a straw this really firmed up and needed a spoon. I didn't figure out the calories but will once I get to work and will add them. It was REALLY good!!!

Odd thing is, believe it or not, it wasn't all "banana-y" it tasted creamy, chocolaty and a little like banana. Very good!

That sounds good. I had tried this recipe -http://www.thekitchn.com/thekitchn/stay-cool/how-to-make-creamy-ice-cream-with-just-one-ingredient-093414 - when I was searching for a dairy free, gluten free desert to make for desert for guests with a multitude of dietary considerations. I like your idea of adding a touch of chocolate to it. Note to self: add bananas to the shopping list.

Sounds good. I wonder if you added a Tablespoon of cocoa (20 calories) and a couple packets of truvia or stevia (about 5 calories) instead of the choc. syrup how that would taste? Hummm. It would cut the calories by about 75.

I tried putting pure cocoa powder in my banana smoothies (1 small banana, 1/2 cup plain yogurt, Splenda, a glass of ice, maybe a tiny bit of skim milk, if it needs thinning to blend) and it turned out to be pretty awesome.
