Default Lane Bryant ad controversy...what do you think?

Gonna try to post a link to the story on MSN...we'll see if it works...

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/36699876

Just in case, basically two networks are refusing to air a new Lane Bryant ad for a line of bras during certain time slots. The ads feature a plus sized model in a bra, showing cleavage. I haven't seen it....has anyone else?

Hello double standard? The Victoria's Secret Fashion Show airs every year in prime time on CBS. They've got ads on TV. ABC has Dancing with the Stars - there's more half-naked women and "boobage" on that show than the Victoria's Secret show.

Thoughts?

Here's the commercial by the way.

Definitely a double standard. This is exactly what is wrong with American culture. I grew up in Europe so nudity was abundant on television, they even have nudity in commercials. It's no big deal, it's the human form and kids are not prohibited from seeing it. But here it's such a big deal to see nudity... no wonder we have men disrespecting women so much, no wonder there is so much violence against women. These topics are definitely related, one just has to open their eyes. I grew up (like all people in Europe) going to topless beaches and thought nothing of it. It's not taboo.

I'll never understand why children here are shielded from the human body but have unlimited access to violent video games and television shows.

By the way, I've been disappointed by Victoria Secret models for over a decade. In the 90's the models were gorgeous and looked a lot more like the Lane Bryant model depicted in this commercial. Of course it's ok to see the VS models on tv... they look like boys.

Plus-size women generally need bras, just like non-plus size women. Companies that sell and manufacture bras for plus-size women should be able to make similar adverts to those made by the manufacturers and sellers of non-plus size bras, and pay to have them aired. I have a hard time believing the refusal to air the advert was based on anything other than 'eeeewww! ick! fat ladies! in bras!' since it's hardly as if plenty of similar adverts aren't out there already.

Finally seeing the commercial (couldn't load the video at home)...I totally agree with my initial stance. Nothing wrong with it. In fact, you see MORE in VS commercials than in this one. Double standard and networks should be ashamed.

Default Lane Bryant commercial not allowed on certain networks

It's not about weight loss, but it's about weight! This is an article about ABC and FOX not wanting to air a Lane Bryant lingerie commercial, saying it is too sexy. (the article rightly points out that these networks do show Victoria's Secret commercials all the time--so what's the REAL problem with the Lane Bryant commercials?)

I can’t read the story or see the commercial, but the idea of this infuriates me. What is their reasoning for refusing to air the commercial, has anyone come out and actually said?

It makes me angry and sad. Some VS commercials could be considered soft core porn…what with the little twig women rolling around in their lacy thongs and push up bras, spread eagle on the bed, pushing their butts and cleavage out. They’ve always kind of made me mad. Those ads are obviously geared more towards men than women…or they are designed to make women think they will be more appealing to men in those particular underwear. As if wearing them makes one look like Heidi Klum.

How are we ever going to progress in this country if the media refuses to even acknowledge that plus size women exist? We exist…we need bras! And we can be just as sexy and beautiful and in a tasteful way.

This sucks.

I think it's a great commerical. What's the difference between that and Victoria's Secret? They show more skin than that. How about beach volleyball? Their bikinis are skimpier than this model's lingerie.

Ha what was up with that McRib text? Did someone photoshop that into the ad, or is that the REAL ad? I was expecting the text to say something like "can't wait to see you" and she was dressing to see a man!

I see nothing wrong with it and think she is more beautiful than the VS models. Makes no sense why they wouldn't air it.

(I have been having a Facebook discussion about this since yeasterday) I think the real reason they find the adds to be more sexy because the Layne Bryant models have real breasts, and you can see a large portion of their breasts...and the Viki Secret ones have fake, not-very-sexual breasts...that are not spilling out, and you see a lot of chest bone rather than breast. And the viki secret models are FAKE! As in: you could show a nude barbie doll on tv, but not a nude woman! Those are my thoughts LOL!

It's absolutely a double standard. VS ads have aired that are far more "racy."

That girl was curvy, for sure, but the biggest part of her were her breasts. I doubt she's bigger than a size 10. I realize a size 10 is huge in the modeling world, but I think she was incredibly beautiful/sexy and I'd kill to look like that right now. I can't imagine too many guys kicking her out of bed! Good for Lane Bryant for pushing the issue.

I'm still trying to figure out which are the BRAS she's trying on in the ad. I've only found the last one so far in the online catalogue. She does look gorgeous and I really don't know why Fox would have objected, the Victoria's Secret commercials they air are no different in the skin they show.

I think the model in the add is beautiful and there is nothing wrong with the commercial. They show women in Bikini's on tv, movies commercials.. they show victorias secret.. Bras and undies.. aren't they almost the same as a bikini? I will have to agree with Lane Bryant.. there could be discrimination for the plus size factor.. but of course, it being bras and underwear.. no one could really say for sure which it really is.

Here is the deliciously funny thing about this. I don't see this as fat discrimination as much as I see it as stemming from the reality that women with curves ARE sexier.

Lane Bryant Commercial

Victoria Secret Commercial

To me the first commercial is sexier because the woman really is sexier than the too skinny models in the Victoria Secret commercial that have to wear push up bras to even look like they have cleavage.

Do I think they should allow the Victoria's Secret commercial and not the Lane Bryant one? No. But the ruling by the networks are more of an indication of the reality of TRUE sex appeal.
