Default Disposal of energy saving bulbs ?

We bought our home almost 3 yrs ago. The energy saving bulbs that came with the house are going out. We've replaced the with new ones but have no idea what to do with the ones that have gone bad. We're just collecting them because they say we can't throw them away due to the high levels of mercury in them. Sooooo where do we take them then???
We live in a small town (35,000) we don't have all the luxuries we did when we lived in a large city: recycling centers and such.

Do you have places like Home Depot or Lowe's? They sometimes take them.
