I read the Volumetrics book and felt that it was a simple concept stretched out to make a book. That being said, it's a good concept, and, as it happens, the way I'd already fallen into eating. Basically, it encourages you to make your food choices wisely, with an eye toward getting more food for your calories. There are quite a few rather confusing tables in the book where they arrange foods by "caloric density" but somehow things come out in a funny order because the serving sizes vary from listing to listing. You can get more reliable nutrition info from standard sources and use it to apply the Volumetrics concept. It's worth reading, but it's not a book I'll go back to again and again.
