Default Hair loss.

Okay everyone I need help here. My doctors office is giving me the big blowoff on my questions, so here I am.

I am losing my hair. By losing I mean more than a fist size of hair ball in my hand each time I comb it or take a shower. Prior to surgery I had very thick, full, curly hair.. Now it is dry, brittle, and falling out by the hands full.

I am taking 5000 Biotin, and I am getting my protein. WHAT gives? Has this happened to anyone else? I know they say to expect some hair loss... but at this rate I will have no hair in about a month.

I didn't have surgery, but my weight came off fast at first and boy did I lose hair. It's tapered off as my weight loss has slowed, but I'm still paranoid about every strand I see fall out. I just wanted to say that I feel your pain!

I have a friend that had the surgery... and she started taking prenatal vitamins, and the problem has cleared up.

I am coming up on three months out. I am losing hair also. There is not much you can do about it. The "shock" of the surgery that our bodies go through is the main cause of the hair loss. For most people it last from about 3 months til 8 months. Biotin is something alot of people swear by but the reason your hair is falling out now is not from what you are doing right now. Make sure you get in your protein requirements, take your vitamins, and like I said, some people take biotin. It won't help right now, but later on as your hair cycles it will help some. Some people have tried Rogaine. Not much really helps, you have to ride it out. If mine gets worse I am looking at wigs..lol

my doc had told me that the hair falling out was because of the massive, rapid weight loss - and to make sure i ate protein, got enough water, and don't forget that we need a little fat.

also, make sure that you don't stress your hair with rubber bands and pulling it tightly and so on.

have you tried the PIA but good-for-your hair olive oil treatment? work it through your hair, wrap in a towel and sit with this for about 30 minutes. and then wash [you'll have to wash it several times]. this should take care of the dryness, at least.

and i know you're not going to like this next idea, but here goes. get a haircut. short hair works better while your hair is falling out. but also, please don't despair!!! THIS IS TEMPORARY. your hair will grow back.

just keep up the good work.

I found the term I was looking for..lol..it's called telegen effluvium. You can google it and it will explain alot of it.

The gastric bypass is my 4th major surgery, I had 3 back surgeries prior, and I lost hair from all of them. it lasts about 3 to 6 months, and should slow down after that. my hair just started falling out from the gastric bypass, but it is behaving exactly the same as it did from the other 3 surgeries.

Justasweety nailed it - it's a process called telogen effluvium. All the protein and supplements in the world won't prevent it, but if they make you feel better, take them - they will improve the quality of the new hair growing in.
