I taught elementary school in Germany for DODDS (Department of Defense Dependent Schools) for a few years in the 80's. The pay and benefits were very good, I was teaching in English and the curriculum was similar to what I'd taught in the US and I loved it. At the time all I needed was a bachelor's degree and state certification, I'm not sure if the requirements have changed but it should be easy enough to find out the current requirements.

For most places in Asia you just need a Bachelors degree in any subject. Masters if you want to teach at a university. There's a good forum with information called Dave's ESL Cafe which answers almost any question.

That site has a lot of jobs listed but there are also recruiters that you can go through and they help out with paperwork and visas and finding positions for you.

I did want to stay but I missed everyone back home so I decided to come back. I would definitely consider going back again though.

Look at http://forums.eslcafe.com/job/ for details about each place. Visa regulations and certification requirements vary with each country (and each year!) so you'll need to check for the most recent info.

Europe and the Middle East are out unless you have state certification and 2-3 years experience for international schools (for non-international, Europe requires European passport, the Middle East requires the MA to be in TESOL or similar), but Asia is your best bet if you need money. Korea is where you will make the most money, and if you already have an MA (since you are planning PhD I assume you do), then Chinese universities can pay well compared to the hours you work. Japan is still entry-level work without a related MA/language skills or degree in education with experience. Taiwan is a good bet too.
