Question Quinoa for breakfast?

I'm wondering if anyone has tried quinoa for breakfast and if so, did you like it? I saw a few recipes on here but no feedback from anyone. They talked about it on TV today and it has more protein than steel cut oats so I thought I might give it a try.

Also, all this talk of almond milk in oats makes me ask why that instead of cow or soy milk?

You can (and I have before South Beach) but 1/2 cup is not very satisfying.

When we have quinoa left over from supper I sometimes have it for breakfast. I'm not a huge fan though. I much prefer my morning oats.

I've only ever tried it with milk and splenda, milk, splenda and vanilla, and milk, splenda, cinnamon. I might like it better as a breakfast if I tried a "real" recipe.

I haven't tried it for breakfast, because I'm set with a meal I don't ever change. I like it at other times. Costco is selling it now-organic.

I don't really like cows milk. I stopped using it years ago because I felt I was lactose intolerant. I think I'd be ok now, but because I never use it-it tastes sour to me.

My Mom and Sis have both had breast cancer, and one of the foods my sis was instructed to stay away from was soy products-so I stay away, too.

I love quinoa, and have it for breakfast often. Thoug I prefer it savory to sweet, so even if I have it for breakfast, it's usually in the form that wouldn't necessarily be thought of as breakfast foods (but sweet breakfast foods have always turned my stomach).

I often use quinoa as a substitute for rice in fried rice - With little to no oil (it's more like simmered rice), lots of veggies, a scrambled egg, and asian seasonings (fish sauce, soy sauce, five spice powder, garlic).

I've tried quinoa a few times, not on southbeach, but because my friend needs gluten free foods. I liked it, it kinda sorta was like eating oatmeal.

Thanks for the input. I am going to try it... eventually. That and almond milk. Probably together Does it sound horrible to say that I hope I like it but not too much? This time around I am trying to find palatable foods but not eat those things that I worry will set me off or make me lose control. Which is why I am hesitating to add back in steel cut oats for breakfast. And no Triscuits for a long time!

I do have that problem with quinoa. I love it but it is very nutrient dense (IE calorie dense!). Now I make it as part of a planned meal or better yet, a salad. Then I portion out the rest.

I adore quinoa. I make a bunch of it and use it for things like:

Making turkey meatballs
Making salmon patties
Reconstituting with warm milk and cinnamon for breakfast
Of course--as a side dish too

Yep, absolutely adore it--great food in my book--super versatile, healthy, cheap, you name it.

btw, I understand about the triggers..I haven't had this problem with quinoa..it's GI rating is in the low 60's....not too bad but higher than oatmeal

p.s. LOVE Almond milk-it's all I drink!

I didn't like quinoa the first time I tried it. It tasted somewhat bitter (but I didn't know to rinse the quinoa before cooking).

Most quinoa sold in North Americda is rinsed before it is sold, but how well it's rinsed seems to vary tremendeously. If it isn't rinses very well, it will have some degree of a "soapy" flavor.

I always soak the quinoa for at least 15 minutes, and then rinse two or three times. It's probably overkill, but I don't ever want to get that soapy taste again.

I has seen that about rinsing on the Today show segment about quinoa and already wrote in in to the recipes I might try. I think I will take your lead and soak too. They didn't have it at Target today so I will try the grocery store next then venture to Whole Foods if I need to.
