300+ Getting Fit After 40 #319

TO MARCH

This group is for those dealing with the challenges of being fit when you have a significant amount of weight to lose which becomes harder after age 40. If you're an old or new friend and not over 40 and feel this is the place to post, jump right in!

j-ann 03-01-2014 05:33 PM

March arrived in central NY like a lamb, clear and single digit cold but we got to 33 this afternoon. Some snow every day until mid-week. Temps are now dropping back into teens and maybe getting to the low 20s for highs through Wednesday - then we have a 3 day climb to the mid 40's. We'll need shorts and sun tan lotion!

Stressful afternoon yesterday. Leaking toilet. The maint. guys came and fixed it right away but I actually threw myself into hot flashes over it. I did not eat though. YES! Actually wasn't hungry but I had so many points left that at around 8 I did have some chicken and a pkg. of Green Giant cauliflower in cheese sauce. I still ended up under points but it was a reasonable #. 4 pts I think.

THINK SPRING!

dgramie 03-02-2014 06:38 AM

Went to my grandsons bday yesterday. Pizza was lunch at the party but I was ok with that. Three of my little ones came home with me and spent the night. They were awake at 4 am. It will make for a really long day!!!!!
Hoping my son gets here before the bad weather does. We are suppost to get ice today.
Hubby's labs all were great and dr was thrilled. I know his a1c is up but she hasn't gotten that back yet. Guess she will call if it's bad! He agreed with her it's time to get his numbers back down and he did pretty good yesterday. Today we are back to counting his carbs. I may try it myself for a month and see if I can lose. He is allowed 45 per meal. I will set my goal lower.

Praying we don't lose power in this storm.

Vortex_VVV 03-02-2014 09:33 AM

Thanks for getting us started, Carol. I posted in Feb. yesterday because I forgot it was March! And how are you doing?

Judy, we had a nice-ish day here yesterday too, but like Debbie we're expecting ice/sleet/snow all day today. Aarrggh. Wish I shared your low appetite problem, but I am finding that really pushing fruits and veggies is helping me keep my fingers out of the weekly points.

Debbie, so glad DH's numbers were good. Here's hoping we both keep our power today!

Well, all the sudden the scale is going down a little every day. I've been in this territory earlier this year, and I'm still not going to make this leg of the diet bet, but I'm hoping maybe I can catch up next month. Boy, it would be really nice to get at least SOME of my money back.

j-ann 03-02-2014 10:35 AM

Yesterday was a good one. I was POP.

Today I slept until after 9AM. That's almost unheard of for me but I had a couple toss and turn nights in a row so I must have needed to catch up. Even the dog slept in. Think I'll just stay in and watch the snow fall today.

Stealing this from Angela:

dgramie 03-03-2014 07:00 AM

Pop day yesterday. Woohoo!!
Grandkids made it home before the storm got bad! I adore them but wasn't looking forward to being snowed in with them. The youngest was running fever and they took her to the dr. She has double ear infections.

We ended up with a inch plus of sleet and freezing rain and then a couple of inches of snow on top of that. I am very thankful it's almost over and we didn't lose power.

I am noticing if I eat dairy I am bloated and miserable. Will start watching it and decide what's causing it and avoid it!!!
Guess our bodies change as we age.

Today I think hubby will have leftovers for lunch and dinner may be veggie soup.

Vortex_VVV 03-03-2014 08:52 AM

Glad we had a good Sunday. Judy, our numbers are so close…

I was fine eating and exercise wise yesterday, but lacked motivation for much of anything else. I have to figure out how to be more resilient in the face of minor obstacles like weather.

Well, here's to a better Monday.

I notice that yesterday Angela! We are pacing each other. Looks like I have a little catching up to do. :)

It's so cold out. 6º I think. I need to get to the store today, or tomorrow at the latest. I'm starting to run low on everything. :( If the sun stays out it should warm the interior of the car a bit. That will make me think it's warmer out than I think as I wait for the engine to warm up. I'll decide as the day goes on.

Deb, I'm glad your kids got home. Hopefully the sleet and ice will melt soon.

Heather, Carol, Ubee, and everyone else. Hope you're doing okay.

Let's shoot for a really good week!

dgramie 03-03-2014 07:39 PM

Hubby's dr called his a1c was 7.7. She isn't happy.
We were pop today and both got exercise shoveling snow and ice. 45 carbs max per meal for him and I'm shooting for under 100 per day I think.

dgramie 03-04-2014 07:42 AM

Today starts the slow warm up.
I plan to start working on paperwork I am behind on. Today I need to call about insurance. Seems like it keeps going up.
I am not sure if I will get kids today or not. I'm ready for spring and having a routine. I get the kids back in order and we have snow and messes everything up. Can't wait to be able to take them outside to play.

Food today will be pop!! Not sure yet what it will be but it will be pop!!

j-ann 03-04-2014 10:12 AM

Hi Ladies and Larry!

I'm still POP. Since my w/i is on Thurs. I'm hoping it shows on the scale. 2 days to go.

The dog's agility class got canceled, again, due to the horrid cold. I think I might make a run to BJs in a bit. I need things that come in big packages, like butter lettuce and broccoli among other things. FYI one plastic box of their lettuce is equal to at least 6-8 of the bags from the supermarket and fresh heads are a lot more expensive here as well. It stays fresh longer too.

Can't wait for it to warm into the 30s. Maybe by Thursday if we are lucky.

Hi all. Doing okay here, but like the rest of you, tired of the weather. Tired of working all day, too, but I have more to do this evening.

Hang in there, let's have a good Wednesday.

I am not catholic but like the idea of giving up something for lent. I am giving up Facebook. I spend to much time on it. I am also giving up junk. If it's not healthy then I don't need it. I will still eat a few chips at Mexican. I will limit it to 8.
I am finishing the scarfs I have yarn for and then put it all away. Time to be active and not sit so much.
Carbs were high yesterday. I had subway for lunch.

j-ann 03-05-2014 08:06 AM

Good day again yesterday. WooHoo!

I hope everyone is having a good week and remembering to think well of themselves.

Had a loss this week for the first time in a while. Hard to say whether that's TOM's departure or my experiment. But, WW decided to throw a wrinkle in my plan and reduce my daily points because of today's WI. So I think I'm going to compromise and say I'll stick to my NEW daily points total this week, BUT I can go over by exactly 1 a couple of days if I need to. Next week I'll stick to the new daily total exactly. I was just getting used to 44… need a little time to adjust to 43.

Hope everyone's thawing out…

Great day!! Being pop feels good !! Gotta find some veggies hubby will eat.

dgramie 03-06-2014 06:48 AM

We went to bed extra early last night. It felt good to get the extra sleep. Hubby survived the day even though he was mad a lot about not being able to snack. I am pleased that I was able to stay pop. Hoping knowing our health is at risk will keep me focused. Scale didn't budge but it will!! Hoping to get some exercise in today.
Snow is slowly melting. Can't wait to be outdoor. I am also pretty excited about the time change this weekend.
Hubby has to have the heart test tomorrow. They have been rescheduled a few times due to weather.
Have a great pop day everyone!!!

Vortex_VVV 03-06-2014 09:50 AM

Debbie, Hope hubby's heart test goes well. I don't know what his complaints about veggies are, but here are a few ideas I like.

If he likes spicy things, you might try my favorite squash recipe: Slice yellow squash and zucchini (you can add sliced carrot too, if you want). Saute in a little olive oil with minced garlic and a pinch (or more if you're brave) of red pepper flakes. All the hot-heads I know gobble these up. Of course, the oil is added calories, but it's healthy oil and make the veggies filling.

Have you tried mashing cauliflower? There are lots of recipes, but all pretty much just like mashing taters. Some recommend adding low-carb imitation mashed potato flakes to make the texture more like taters, but I've never found those.

Instead of broccoli with yellow cheese sauce, I do steamed broccoli and sprinkle each serving with just a table spoon of grated parmesan and then some black pepper.

Hanging in here. Yesterday an evening event prevented me from getting all my water in, and also kept me standing (but not walking) for far too long, and I could tell my legs were still swollen this morning. But stayed on track eating-wise even though there was unexpected birthday cake. Small victories.

Expecting it to get above 40 today, so I'm committed to getting outside for a walk.

Okay, I'd better get myself to the office. Have a great day everyone.

POP since Feb. 24 (10-day streak) -- WI on Feb. 24: 280

j-ann 03-06-2014 12:53 PM

WW today. Down another 1.6 lbs. I'm happy. Thought it might be more but this is fine!

Angela: I do this too: steamed broccoli and sprinkle each serving with just a table spoon of grated parmesan and then some black pepper. Sometimes I add cauliflower too. It's great!

Deb: Hope your hubby good test results.

It was 12 below here this morning but now the temps will be reaching towards almost 40 every day.

dgramie 03-07-2014 07:08 AM

Whew what a day!!! One of the little ones I keep was playing wii and the remote slipped off his wrist and went flying into our tv. We had to go and buy a new one. It was sickening!!! Thankful to have had money I made from scarves to pay for it.
We stayed on plan even with the stress of having to run to walmart. We picked up subway and brought it home. It really maxed out our carb limit but I still came in under 100.
Scales haven't budged but I know they will. I truly feel my head is in the game.
My daughter is coming home for the night. Can't wait for my friends to see my new little one.
Big warm up this next week!!! Hoping we can get out and walk. Already reminded my little ones moms to bring jackets with hoods for our walks.

Vortex_VVV 03-07-2014 08:22 AM

Great WI Judy. Down, down, down!

Debbie, sounds like chaos! Who knew a remote could do so much damage?

Hope everyone else is doing well.

I'm staying POP but will be challenged for the next few days. Today's our last day of class before spring break; not having my usual schedule is always a challenge for me once I've gotten into a routine.

But, I did get to take a walk in the state park yesterday. Maybe not the greatest idea--there was still a fair amount of snow and slush around and I thought I was going to end up falling--but the fresh air sure felt great. DH and I will try to get some more outdoors time; he's taking off MTW to spend part of break with me.

j-ann 03-08-2014 01:00 PM

Got my act back together yesterday after a day of bad choices on Thursday.

I swear I've been at the grocery store every day this week. My list is failing me. Yesterday I ate the last of my veggies so this morning I stocked up on broccoli, asparagus and butter lettuce.

Angela, try keeping your eating plan just like you were working while on break.

Deb, Bummer about the tv.

Carol, Heather....... Where are you?

Vortex_VVV 03-08-2014 09:03 PM

Judy, good job getting back on track. I'm keeping my points the same as they were, but the extra challenges have to do with being home and having DH with me. He doesn't have the kind of weight problem I do but is not a healthy eater and trying to accommodate both of us is always a challenge. Today worked fine; I let him eat the leftovers from last night's dinner out and had a much lighter dinner myself. Still have points left for a snack before bedtime if I want it.

Hope everyone else is having a good weekend.

Huge success yesterday. I joined friends for dinner last night at Red Lobster. I knew there would be a long wait once we got there and about 2 hrs later than normal for my dinner time so I had an ounce of chicken right before I left home. I had a lovely meal (broiled flounder) and a cheddar bay biscuit and .... I did NOT go over my daily points! Since I'd had breakfast and lunch before the dinner invite I am really proud of myself. :woohoo:

Hope everyone is having a great weekend and if you live in a daylight savings time State the you remembered to set your clocks ahead.

I feel like I've been gone forever. It's been a very busy week with my office moving about 30 miles away and my entire family being here to celebrate my parent's 67th wedding anniversary. It's all over with the family including drama. Now if I could just get my office moved back to my normal two mile commute.

I think food has been pretty good - haven't been on the scale but I did make it to the pool early yesterday morning for great stress relief and wonderful exercise.

Let's do this!

Vortex_VVV 03-09-2014 08:54 PM

Great work at Red Lobster, Judy.

Wow, sounds like a crazy week, Carol.

I've been staying OP, but not getting as much exercise as I should.

So far, it looks like the 30-day experiment is working well. 5 pounds off in two weeks--better than I've done in ages. But let's see how the whole month works out.

POP since Feb. 24 (14-day streak) -- WI on Feb. 24: 280

j-ann 03-10-2014 07:17 PM

Lunch choices were not the best yesterday but I only went 3 pts. over my daily so it wasn't a total disaster. Today I'm coming in low. I can have a snack later!

Angela: You are doing really, really well. Keep it up!

Carol: Talk about stress! Sounds like you handled it well. I moved offices a few times. They were not my favorite times but the one thing I learned when my travel time went up to 45 minutes was that it gave me time to wind down before I walked in the front door in the evening. I'm a morning person so getting to work on time and being cheerful was a goal. I kinda liked teasing the grumps and last minute arrivees in the morning. Keep getting yourself to the pool too.

We are expecting a storm with up to a foot of wet snow on Wednesday into early Thurs. We are all hoping that the warm front pushes farther north than expected and it is mostly rain but that's pretty doubtful. I may do WW Wed. morning rather than Thurs. I'll decide as the week moves along.

Everyone enjoy your week and stick to your program.

dgramie 03-11-2014 06:48 AM

I am staying pop! It's so much easier with hubby eating right. My scales still haven't moved down. I know it will!
We are getting rain out if the next system. They said to expect a few flakes mixed in. Today we are going to be in the 70s. I took the kids out for a walk yesterday. I am out of shape bad!!!!
My sinuses have been good for a month and within a few blocks of walking I could feel them filling up again. I'm sure it was the wind. I had to start meds back.
I plan to be outside again and walking a few extra blocks today.

dgramie 03-12-2014 06:53 AM

Great op day yesterday. We hit 75!! Low tonight will be 19. They are saying we could see flurries. I hate the crazy weather this yr.
I spent over an hour out with the kids. The wind picked up so we came in. I could have just sat in the sun all day. It felt so good. I was excited to see I have flowers coming up. I do think I lost a few plants due to our cold winter.
Have a great day everyone!

Vortex_VVV 03-12-2014 06:46 PM

Debbie, glad things are going well for you.

Judy, thanks for the encouragement.

I was just a little over a pound away from meeting my goal for the diet bet. I don't think I'll win this month either, but I'm hoping I'll be able to catch up in month 3 or 4 when the goal goes down to 2% and then 1%. I have to make some of this money back!

Snow here today. !

How's everyone else doing?

POP since Feb. 24 (15-day streak) -- WI on Feb. 24: 280

j-ann 03-12-2014 07:26 PM

Hi Ladies, I'm declaring today a good one. I have to find something to eat to even come close to my daily WW points. That's unusual.

It was raining this morning then the temp dropped and the snow blew in. So far, as long as your not driving, it hasn't been too bad. About 6" new snow with 1"-4" still on the way. Problem is winds will pick up to 30 mph and we'll be around 5º by morning. I went out and opened and closed the car doors after the switch to snow so hopefully the car won't be frozen shut tomorrow.

Deb: Glad you and the kids got outside. We are supposed to be in the 40s on Friday.

dgramie 03-13-2014 06:52 AM

I didn't have a op day yesterday. I did good till our meal at church last night. It was breakfast foods. I was given a casserole that has a sage stuffing as the bottom layer. It was not good and I couldn't eat it. I ate a biscuit and a bit of fruit. Everyone was eating doughnuts and I got one. I had really done great limiting bad carbs but it seems like if I eat carbs it makes me crave more.
I have a healthy day planned today.
Judy we are at 16 this morning but will be near 50 today. Forcast is for 50-62 for the next week. I love 70s, but not ready to run the air and my upstaira was really warm the other night.
Scales are down a couple if lbs. hubby is down 7 in just 2 weeks.

Vortex_VVV 03-13-2014 09:43 AM

Judy, hope that snow melts quickly for you. We had about an inch yesterday but it was sunny in the afternoon, so a lot of it's gone.

Deb, WTG for you and hubby on the weigh-ins! Potlucks or other situations where you don't know the menu in advance are TOUGH, no doubt about it. Good job planning for a recovery day.

Doing fine here. Scale's been headed steadily downward. I know it'll stop at some point, at the very least when TOM decides it's time to roll into town. But I'm going to stick to the plan for at least this 30-day trial period and then in all likelihood I'll stick with it as long as it's producing results. I just have to prepare not to get derailed by slowing of my loss, special events, or depression.

One thing that might help is I'm working on a plan for getting some order into my life. That might help stave off the unexpected blues that often are my undoing.

POP since Feb. 24 (16-day streak) -- WI on Feb. 24: 280

Didn't get too WW this morning. It took me 45 minutes to clean off and deice the car.It was 7º when I left for the meeting. The roads are like a greasy washboard. I just wasn't comfortable driving any distance on them so I came back home and will go to a different location and weigh in tomorrow morning. I'd go later today but I don't think it'll warm up enough for road salt to start working. We'll see.

Had a POP day yesterday. Stayed in all day. It nearly killed me as I like to get outdoors everyday. 5 minutes of shoveling for the dog just didn't cut it. :)

Deb, Angela - Feels great to be losing, doesn't it? Good job!

Lets make today POP!

dgramie 03-14-2014 09:11 AM

Had a pop day yesterday. Cooked a big breakfast today and will really have to work to stay under 1500. After talking with my kids and hubby and a dear friend I am convinced I was to low on calories at 1200. So giving 1500-1600 a month or so.
Working on sprucing things up a bit here. Spring is in the air. Even if snow is forcast for Sunday night lol

Vortex_VVV 03-14-2014 09:27 AM

Judy, hope WI goes well tomorrow. Hope those roads clear up for you, too!

Deb, wow, didn't realize you were at 1200. Hope your new experiment works out well.

My scale is up a bit this morning, but I'm pretty sure it's just from jogging. I noticed this last month when I tried to push myself with jogging--if my legs are sore the next morning, the scale WILL be up. So I had a cup of white tea this morning--supposed to be like 10 times the anti-inflammatory power of green tea--and I'll keep pushing water today, but definitely need to give my legs some recovery days.

j-ann 03-14-2014 10:21 AM

Went to weigh in today at the only WW location nearby that's open on Friday. I wonder If I could get them to deliver the scale I was on to my regular meeting spot. I lost 3 lbs! :dizzy:

Roads are 99% better than yesterday, main roads have only a few icy spots left. Village streets are still pretty awful. Lots of snow over ice but with temps shooting up today they should be able to get them cleared.

Angela, I've never tried white tea. Where did you get it? Does it have any flavor?

Deb, I think 1500/day is a better goal too.

You all have a great day.

dgramie 03-16-2014 08:28 AM

My older daughter came home Friday to visit. The baby was so fussy with his tummy. Out of all the kids I have kept and been around he is the most miserable little one I have ever seen. He is on medicine for it but they may have to change it again. I took the night shift and let my daughter sleep except for his nursing time. I got less than 2 hours of sleep. I truly don't know how my daughter is functioning. She has to go back to work in 2 wks. I worry about her.

We had a great day yesterday. Hubby and I ran to walmart and then did some other shopping. I got some fantastic deals at goodys. We ate lunch out. We came home and did a few things outside and even cleaned up the car.
Today we will be getting rain sleet and snow. Hope the 70 degree temps yesterday warmed the ground enough to keep it from sticking.

Scales just yo-yo back and forth within a 5 lb range.

j-ann 03-16-2014 09:28 AM

I would love to clean out my car but everything would just get coated in salt again. Think I'll wait and just plan to toss the salt stiffened, rubber mats after mud season.

Deb, I'm so sorry your grand baby has tummy troubles. It's so frustrating when we can't help them feel better.

Yesterday was POP! YAY.

Cold today. Only going up to twenty degrees. Warming during the week.

Have a super Sunday!
