300+ and getting fit after 40 #288
This group is for those dealing with the challenges of being fit when you have a significant amount of weight to lose which becomes harder after age 40. If you're an old or new friend and not over 40 and feel this is the place to post, jump right in!

July is here - what will we do with it? I am starting 100 day POP challenge on July 5 - that will take me to October 13.
Feels so good to be without the water weight sluggishness from the plane ride. Heading to the garden to get rid of some weeds before it hits 105 today.
Stay strong!

I can hardly wait to start the 100 day challenge. I have a few challenges this weekend and then will be ready to hit it hard.
Still struggling with the knee and getting frustrated with it. ITs alot better but still not normal. By the time evening gets here Im wiped out and ready for bed early. Time to change that and get into a better routine.

Carol, Debbie, I'm up for that challenge too, big time... anyone else in with us???
Oh, DHs and their eating.... mine doesn't have many extra pounds--maybe 10--but he has a cholesterol problem, has had since his 20s. And I don't try to give him any eating advice, coz it just doesn't work. Not that I'm great about taking advice myself...
Heather, Great news about the dog!
Debbie, I know it's frustrating, but sleep is good when you're healing, so maybe it's a good sign.
Well, I'm still on the road, ladies, writing from a Bob Evans in Ohio, so time to sign off and get back to driving!
Angela

angela- my knee is alot better. I went to walmart and didnt wear my brace and didnt limp much at all. Im able to bend it alot better. I will continue to wear the brace when im at home chasing the kids and climbing the steps. I cant wait till I can bend it and sit in the floor like normal. I have always been limber and its killing me to have to lay a kid on the couch to change them instead of sitting on the floor with them. I guess its one of the things I have always taken for granted.
Carol- enjoy your pool this weekend and relax.
Heather- gardens are as great as normal here. I think this is vine year or something. I have beautiful plants but not many tomatoes hanging on them. Same with the squash, huge plants and lots of male blooms but not many squash.
I keep forgetting to buy a tape measure at walmart. I want to record my measurements and go that route for awhile. Its always so much fun and it really helps when the scales dont move.
My scales are the same as last week. Hubby is down 3lbs. We are allowing ourself a cheat meal each week. IM going to try and not let mine be a real cheat but hubby feels he needs it.

POP is hard for me as I am still working out a plan I can live with, afterall for me, this is a lifestyle change. I figure at 350# if I am walking 2400 min a month for now I am moving in the right direction. I have also cut out most of the processed crap, a lot of sugar ect and am eating whole grain. On a good day half my volume comes from veggies and fruits. I still have things to work out.... like when I walk an hour in the morning an hour later I am famished but walk the same hour in the evening and I am satisfied with a healthy snack. I walk a route so all the hills ect are the same.

Debbie--YAY on the knee!!! I really like your new pic.
fatgyrl--I'm sorry, I must have missed you initially, so Welcome! Is there a name we can call you other than your username? I hate to call you fatgyrl all the time...
Carol: I hope it wasn't too hot in the garden. My gosh, it's quite an adjustment coming home after Boston. It seemed hot when I walked for 2 hours, but it wasn't anything compared to the heat here in centrai Ill.
So I'm thinking about the 100 day challenge and decided I'm going to divide it into 25-day chunks and adjust my plan for each quarter.
So for the first quarter I'm thinking my plan will be: 1850 calories, at least 2 servings of vegetables, at least 4 glasses of water, 30 minutes of walking or other cardio, and 10 crunches, reverse crunches, push ups, and leg lifts. Most of this I'm already doing, but I need to start working on water, so that's why such a low goal. (It's more than I'm doing right now.)
Hi to all I missed~~must run for now.
Angela

Angela - I'm pondering what my 100 day POP challenge will look like too - it will be accountability based I am sure of. Other than that - work in progress.
Ruth - I'm missing you!
Welcome to the new poster from Nova Scotia - sorry - can't use your username. Something else you use?
Deb - great new pic! What a cutie pie you are holding too!
Heather - I still have garden envy. Be careful and stay hydrated.
Stay strong!

Hello all,
I am here ms. Carol, a little wiped out and ready for a good nights sleep. Darn, I am getting to old to keep up with teenagers. LOL! Their Mom came for them and they left this morning. I think they were more than ready to go home and see Daddy and sleep in their own bed , as my GD said. They were good kids and no problem at all. They do love to stay up half the night though....me not so much!
I didn't do so good with the food after all, but the scale is being nice. I will be back op now and try to stay there.
Everyone have a wonderful weekend! Ruth

Hello all,
I need a bit more support, so I am going to join this thread. I am losing so slowly these days (1 lb a week when I used to lose 2-3 lbs a week) and I am retaining water like crazy.
I have lost a lot of weight since I started in December, but I feel like I am stuck. My body is at that point when it is rebelling against me.
I have to say that I am feeling much healthier and much more energized. I started out super low carb and have gradually let fruit and a little bit of whole grains back into my diet. I know that is why I am losing more slowly, but I was getting really bored and sick of the low carb routine.
How do you ladies plow through a plateau? I have a very focused and energized attitude, but it is demoralizing to watch the scale stay almost stuck every week. I am losing inches though. (I am not measuring myself, I just have a bunch of clothes from my past in smaller sizes that I occasionally try on to see if I am shrinking....)
Anyway, it's great to meet you all! I hope you are all enjoying the holiday so far.

Oh boy, Ruth, get some rest!
Authentic: Hi and welcome! I'm not sure I have any great words of wisdom. I've been losing even more slowly than you--averaging a half pound a week. I don't have a lot of choice about the balance in my diet: I'm a type II diabetic and have had some problems with too much protein, so I have to stay balanced in the traditional sense. I did have a little burst of faster weight loss when I worked on increasing fiber in my diet. For water retention, all I've got is the usual advice: drink lots of water, limit sodium, move often. The only personal insight I have is that I do try to remind myself that my slow loss is, statisticaly, more likely to stay off than a fast loss. Also, I remind myself that I do feel better than I did, so that's a success. I can walk farther, feel less tired, feel stronger, etc--so I try to focus on that to remind myself that this is worth doing.
Okay, ladies, gotta do some cooking. Going to make tomorrow's dinner in advance since it's a scrabble club day and also make some mini muffins to take to the scrabble club (going to try baking with Splenda, wish me luck!)
Angela

I am tired tonight. I only needed half an hour of walking to make the 10 hours of my 7-10 hr walking goal this week. It was late and I really didn't want the dogs out on the highway (the last leg of my 1 hr route) when it was almost dark. I only have a few routes measured for time, so I was just going to guesstimate it and when I got to the road i made a flash decision to switch it up and do the block wharf walk to the Bay.
I don't like the route although 45-48min, it is all downhill to the Bay, which means the return is uphill and it is harder than the hills on my 1 hr route, but it is rural and low traffic.
My hubby says to stop calling it a hill that I should call it a 1500 ft mountain and he takes the van out of overdrive to climb it. I guess it was a LITTLE easier than when I walked it 2 weeks ago but is is still a hard route. The dogs like the Bay
Oh well tomorrow starts another week and I can go back to the usual route.

I stayed the course yesterday while hubby had his cheat meal. Im proud of myself!
Im still working on my 100 day challenge plan. I like the idea of breaking it up. I have thought about 10 days at a time.I have even thought about not weighing but every 10days.Daily weighing is a huge problem of mine.
I cant wait to stop losing and gaining the same 15lbs.

Oh wow, how did I not make it here before now? I think I missed the thread, since Carol started it! (which I loved!)
I really like the idea of a 100-day POP challenge. I also like Angela's idea of 4 quarters and tweaking it for each quarter. It sounds like exactly like what I need to get back on track.
Welcome to new members!!!

Hi all,
Hope everyone is enjoying their holiday weekend. I just finished jogging on the treadmill indoors for 30 mins (it's 90 degrees here), so I am on an endorphin buzz at the moment.
I am new to this thread, so can someone explain what a POP challenge is?
I am up for a challenge! I am just a bit clueless at the moment.
