Default so I'm a dummy..

I have no idea why I have never had a fresh mango at home but I haven't. How in the heck do you cut the thing? What's the secret? Because I made a mess of mine! It was good though what I got off of it.

You're no dummy! I had the same issue the first time I bought mangoes (my roommate at the time had to show me how to cut them). Although I did google right now for more exact directions, lol. There are a few different ways to cut them, my method of choice is to slice & scoop.
  1. Stand the mango on your cutting board stem end down and hold. Place your knife about 1/4" from the widest center line and cut down through the mango. Flip the mango around and repeat this cut on the other side. The resulting ovals of mango flesh are known as the "cheeks". What's left in the middle is mostly the mango seed.
  2. Cut parallel slices into the mango flesh, being careful not to cut through the skin.
  3. Scoop the mango slices out of the mango skin using a large spoon.

Don't feel bad! I've made a wonderful mess out of dozens of mangos over the years - LoL. I love the things but it's never neat when I cut them. I'm going to try the way Gracie posted next time.

I got an Oxo mango cutter - a superfluous piece of kitchen equipment, but it works! And if you eat a lot of mangoes it;s kinda fun to have around.

I eat the skin of some mangos, and slice off pieces like an apple. Some kinds of mango are better than others for this

Good info! I make a mango cucumber salsa every year and make a MESS. I usually buy twice as many as I need so that I can be sure to get some decent pieces out of it. Thanks for asking the question squeak and thanks for the info Gracie!
