Talking Happy Thanksgiving

Happy Thanksgiving! (a day early) I realize there are lots of Canadians around, so I give you a Happy Thursday and permission to pig out!

So, how is everyone in the US celebrating? We are doing the big meal with just the immidate family we eat with each day. So, it will be 7. We had plans for 10, but owell... So, we will deep fry the turkey, dressing, sweet potatoes cooked in orange shells, rolls, gravy, cranberry sauce, peas, mashed potatoes, salad, shrimp, pumpkin pie and pumpkin trifle. (a light reciepe) I don't go too overboard eatting with my gall bladder. A little smidge of this and that. Afterwards, I think a trip to the park for some walking and touch football is in order to settle some food. Nothing except gas stations and a few casinos will be open. I am sure I won't be able to watch anything on tv except for football. That is the problem with a house full of males. Except for my step mom who likes football more than anyone else. My mom is a football fan too. It definately skipped a generation with me!

Hope to hear all your plans. ~flower

Happy Thanksgiving to all my AMerican friends! Hope you enjoy your holiday and all the great food that goes along with it. Have fun and enjoy spending each minute with your loved ones.

P.S. Hubby got home tonight! He brought me home a nice second hand bench and weights.

Hi Flower!

I've been thinking about you and your heartburn - hoping you haven't had any repeat episodes. I will tell you a true story. I started getting bad heartburn about 5 yrs ago. It would start after eating anything full of acid - like OJ and wine - or caffeine or dairy - or sugar. The worst attacks would come after eating ice cream late at night. A couple times I remember sitting straight up in bed with the worst kind of acid in my throat ! oh!

I found some relief by taking Zantac - but it never worked more than a little while and as the years went on - I was taking more and more - it kinda scared me. Finally, I gave up and tried Prevacid - that helped a lot - but if I missed a dose - whoa! trouble.

Since I started eating a low carb diet - my reflux problems are completely gone and I am eating approximately the same quantity of food at the same time of day - just different types of food. One night I cheated and drank a large cup of milk with cookies before bed - sure enough it came back that night with a vengeance - I am not the only low carber to report the relief.

I am not telling you to go low carb - only letting you know what finally worked for me after years and years of problems.

Oh goodness! I am bringing this up on the eve of Thanksgiving....oh well.......!

We're having turkey, low carb stuffing, pumpkin casserole, green bean casserole, potatoes for the hubby and munchkin, cranberries, pickles, olives, jello salad and some great wine!

I am curious about your pumpkin cooked in orange shells and pumpkin trifle....... can you share the recipes?

Have a great day tomorrow.........I am not too crazy about football either - tomorrow is a day for curling up with mags and a blankie and the parade

Virginia - hey! Thanks! I want to learn how to lift weights - how did you learn? a book or someone at the gym?

You have a great day tomorrow too and as Flower said - go ahead and have some great food!

Love, Terri

We are doing Thanksgiving here with my parents and DH's parents and Aunt.
9 total. Sister and brother in law aren't coming this year, which will make life A LOT EASIER. She doesn't help, and *****es about the food.

2 appetizers (don't know what yet!!)
Turkey
Stuffing
Mashed potatoes
Cranberry Orange relish
Mashed rutabaga
Green beans Almondine
Trifle
Truffles

We do it potluck style, so I am just doing items 2-5 (and gravy of course!!)
All good cooks in the family, so the appetizers will be incredible, and fill people up while I finish the turkey. Then we will stuff ourselves on the rest of it!! my mom was afraid not everyone would like the trifle so she bought truffles too!!
I personally will be scarfing the trifle!! (And I love chocolate, so that tells you how much I LOVE my Mom's trifle!!!)

HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO ALL!!!!

We're going to DP's parents house. DP's parents are both Italian. Her mom is an amazing cook. Mom doesn't let us bring anything. The kitchen and the menu are her domain. It will be a delicious meal...always is with her! and she bakes too! At Christmas there are always ten or so types of cookies and then a pie or a cake...it is hard to eat moderatly in that house but I'll try!

Those sweet potatoes cooked in orange peel sound yummy...I would love that recipe also!

There will probably be nine of us.

On the subject of reflux, I've had some really bad episodes of reflux. I took Prilosec for awhile. Now I just take prilosec prn...if I eat something challenging close to bed time I'll take one and it usually works.
But, with the dairy thing, my doctor said that a glass of milk is one of the worst things to have because your stomach produces more acid when you drink milk? I didn't know that and always imagined that milk would neutralize an acidy stomach.

Happy Turkey Day Girlies!
Love, Soozie

I just had to add...we're so goofy...
talking about reflux disease in the Happy Thanksgiving Thread...
that's what I love about Alternachicks.
There really are no rules and you never know what you'll find here...
like, Ellis posting a lovely poem in the lesbi thread instead of the poetry thread...remember when we first made the move and Ellis was forever forgetting which thread she was in?
We love you Ellis.

Happy Turkey Day to the US chicks!

And Happy Thursday to the rest of you!

We will have probably around 20 people at my mom's. 2 turkeys - one 16 lb (just for sandwhichs later), one 21 lb, 3 kinds of breads, plus rolls, mashed potatoes, 2 different kinds of stuffing, lots of veggies - both cook & raw, cranberry sauce, and more desserts then you would know what to do with including my ice cream cake.

This is my old prof/boss's reciepe. I loved them last year. The sweet potatoes: canned yams are fine,
heat & mash them with the oj from the fresh squeezed orange shells to taste
(don't get too thin). Stuff them back into the shells and put a marshmallow on
top w/ a marischino cherry and put back into oven to brown & melt. A variation
is to mash w/ the oj and a little butter, brown sugar or honey, and add nuts
(chopped- your choice).I will print the trifle recipe in a bit. Gotta go find it. ~flower

Happy Thanksgiving to all of the American Alternachicks! Have a great one! So, to all of our Canadian sisters, don't you have Thanksgiving as well? It's in October right? If so what do you usually do to celebrate? I've always wondered about that.

Velvet... we do the same thing as you. Although judging by the menus shown here, you girls eat better than we do. What a variety!!
Happy Thanksgiving, girls.

Yeah, and it's not about the pilgrims, I can't remember how it came about as a holiday. I think some one posted around here somewhere in October when we had our Thanksgiving.

Pumpkin Trifle
1 pkg of gingerbread mix (14.5 oz)
1 1/2 c water
1 egg
4 cups of cold fat free milk
4 oz of sugar free butterscotch pudding mix
1 (15 oz) can of pumpkin
1 t ground cinnamon
1/4 t ground ginger
1/4 t ground nutmeg
1/4 t allspice
1 carton (12oz) reduced fat whipped topping thawed

Mix cake mix water and egg-cook in an 8" sq pan @350 for 35-40 minute. Til toothpick in center comes out clean. Cool 10 min in pan. Cool completely on a wire rack. When cool crumble the cake. Set aside 1/4 cup for garnish.

In bowl, mix milk and pudding mix for 2 minutes til slightly thickened. Stand 2 minutes. Stir in pumpkin and spices, mix well. In a trifle bowl or 3 1/2 cup serving bowl, layer 1/4 of the crumbs, half of pumpkin mixture, 1/4 of the crumbs, half of the whipped topping. Repeat layers. Garnish with the reserved crumbs. Serve immidately or refridgerate.

A 3/4 cup serv is 194 calories, 6 grams of fat (3 saturated), 31 carbs. I got this recipe from Light and Tasty Magazine.

I haven't had a serving yet, but I liked licking the mixing bowl!
