You dont subtract 500 from that number, you can subtract 5001000 from the number you get form taking THAT number on that calculator, and then clicking on the 'daily calorie needs' link, multiplying that number times your bmr and whatever that number is (mine is 2718, so I can subtract 1000 calories from that and eat 1700 cals a day) to lose 2 lbs per week)
