Question Different body types

I met someone today through my work and during the course of conversation she mentioned what she weighed and I was shocked that she weighed EXACTLY what I do now. What was shocking was that she was slim and toned, with no body fat (she was wearing very tight clothes with not much left to the imagination). She may have been an inch or so taller than me (it was hard to tell), but my body certainly doesn't look anything like hers. What gives? We both have the same build. Humph!

It is fascinating isn't it? The differences?

I have trouble with height. I'm surprised how much weight taller women can carry without looking round and soft like me.

There's probably a couple of things afoot here ...

... your perception of you
... your perception of her
... muscle mass
and yes ... body type

If she is muscular her mass would be more compact against her body so she would look smaller and weigh more, if that makes sense?

We're all different, thank God. We all carry weight differently, so of course you wouldn't look exactly like her or her exactly like you - also you said she is taller than you, so that counts. All kinds of things factor into weight distribution. Look up info on bodytypes, such as mesomorphs, ectomorphs, and endomorphs-its an interesting read.

My little sister is my exact same height (we are both 5' 1 3/4"). She has a petite build and the ONE time in her life she got up to 140 pounds, she looked pretty chubby. On those rare times I've weighed 140, I look toned, thin and muscular. I've obviously got a much bigger build than she does. Dang genetics! Why couldn't I get the same genes she did? LOL!

That same sister weighs about 115 lbs. right now (and she's had 4 kids!) but she's a 'skinny fat person'. Even at that tiny weight, she still doesn't look as 'small' as she could. If she toned up and ate healthier, she'd look amazing.

Default Lean Muscle Verus Fat

I think it has to do with how much more lean muscle one has verus fat. One can have the same body frame but different distribution of fat and muscle which can make a huge difference in how one looks.

I'm very tall and was talking to a friend who is a doctor about my wanting to lose weight. She, in a hushed voice (I think trying to lessen the sting of saying it out loud? ) said, "You weigh what, 220?" I almost fell over, and told her that no, I weighed about 100 pounds more than that. I've just got more surface area to spread it around on. And as an apple shape, I look much worse from the side than I do face on.

The bummer part is that I have to lose a massive amount of weight before anyone notices or before I drop a clothing size... And another downside is that I have gained a tremendous amount without the mental wake-up call that I may have gotten earlier if I were shorter because I can wear the same size for about 50 pounds.
