Default My First 10K

Every year, on Memorial Day, there is a 10K race in my hometown. The participants range from serious runners to dads with kids on their shoulders, whole sororities in princess costumes to 90 year-old race walkers. My husband and son have run it every year since we moved here --- and every year, I have been too out of shape, too FAT, to take part.

My first major goal when I joined 3FC at the end of January was to be in good enough shape to be able to part of this tradition in 2009 --- not to run it, not to be top in my age group, just to be able to walk fast enough and long enough to go 6.2 miles before they cleared the streets for the professional race.

AND TODAY I DID IT!

Look at what we can do when we jump it with both feet! Yeah, I am still in crappy shape and I am still fat --- but I am SO much better than I was just 4 months ago! It isn't about getting to goal --- its all about getting to LIVE!

And by the way --- special thanks to Matt with his marathon and a half thread a couple of weeks back: I had just about talked myself around to not doing this again, but that thread straightened my thinking out again. Thanks, Matt!

So, maybe its time for you to look around for a different kind of challenge for yourself in the next few weeks or months --- what is something you have always wanted to do, but felt you couldn't because of your weight? My son has already challenged me to try rock climbing for the first time come Labor Day Weekend (which hits both my weight AND my fear of heights!) --- I'm going for it!

When I was a freshman in high school we had and assignment for a class to make a list of life goals. One thing on my list was to complete a marathon. I remember thinking the the back of my head though that I would never be able to do it. But this year, I am making it top priority in my life to be able to run and complete a half marathon. Yes, right now I am out of shape, but I started the c25k program and really think it will get me in shape and once that is complete I will start to work on longer distances. The race is at the end of March, and I feel as if I have never wanted anything more in my life than to do this next March.

Congratulations on the 10K. I bet that was the best feeling crossing the finish line. Good luck rock climbing. WHEN you conquer that, just think how awesome it will be! You can do it!

That is fabulous! I love hearing things like this, it gives me inspiration. You must tell us how awesome is was to conquer your fears when you go rock climbing, it is on my list to do once I get down to a reasonable weight!

Okay. You're officially my exercise motivator.

I live near Memphis, Tennessee, which is the home of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. If you're not familiar, St. Jude was established by the actor/comedian Danny Thomas back in the early 1960 to provide first rate care for children suffering from cancer. Over the years, they've expanded their research into blood diseases such as sickle cell disease. They do not charge for their services - at all. Two of my students at the high school where I formerly taught are here because of the work of St. Jude. (One is currently in remission from leukemia; the other receives care for sickle cell disease.)

Every December, St. Jude holds a half-marathon and a marathon. The marathon, because of the time limits, isn't really conducive to walkers, but the half-marathon is. I can do 13 miles. I've done it before - in 2006 for the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer. I can do it again. So now I have a new goal. Starting tomorrow, I'm back in the gym.
