Default No longer Morbidly Obese!... and I'm worried

As of today I am no longer Morbidly Obese! I am Obese Class II! But losing to this point has caused a problem... in the last two weeks, I've lost 8 lbs. And the week before, 3 lbs. Surely this is way too fast?

I've been eating 1700 calories a day, sometimes more. I've been exercising only about once a week. So this sudden increase in speed is exhilarating, but I wonder if I should try to slow it down. Can't losing too fast cause health issues?

Anyone have any suggestions?

I'd look at an 8-week trend before doing anything. I find that my period will throw things off. It also depends if you've changed your diet. Using myself as an example I'm down about 8 pounds in 12 days. However, my eating was very off plan for more than a month before that point. So, I know that I'm depleting glycogen as I go back to my usual higher protein diet.

So, I'd look at how much weight you've lost in the last 8 weeks, divide that number by 8 and then decide what to do. I generally still lose 2lbs a week on 2000 calories (some walking) and even 2250 (lifting days). So a lot depends on what you're doing the rest of the day. I'd love to lose faster, but for me, too fast usually leads to a stall, so there's no point.

Oh, and congrats on moving into class II. I'm very jealous of your height, as I need to go to 232 to be there.

Assuming you're eating a healthy, balanced diet which contains plenty of nutrition and is keeping you satisfied, don't worry about losing too fast at this point--you are still very fat and can afford to lose it that quickly. Just relax and be happy with it The "no more than 2 pounds per week" rule is more aimed at people will less to lose. A better guideline for the very obese is up to around 1% of your present bodyweight per week, which for you would be 2.5 pounds. And, you should look at your weight loss as an average over the course of a month or so, not on a weekly basis--because for a woman especially, weight loss is very NOT linear and predictable. (You could lose -1 one week, and 5 the next, but the average there is 2.)

Congratulations on losing that awful word "morbidly"! That is a huge step. I don't have any advice on the speed but "way to go" in losing weight so well.

I think it's normal to lose large amounts of weight in the beginning especially if you have more to lose. I'd say, kick off your shoes and enjoy it.

Congratulations on reaching Class II! Can't wait to join you there. Of course, by then you'll probably be in Class I or less!

Yeah, try not to do what I did after losing faster suddenly and freak out. I lost my momentum and started sabotaging myself, and then had to make a major effort to get back on track.

It is scary - you're diving into the unknown here, but try to celebrate it and not let it freak you out. Also nthing the "weightloss is not linear" - changes in hormones and salt intake can cause significant pauses or sudden whooshes. Fun to watch, but the average is a better indication of how you are doing. Have a listen to some of Jillian Michaels' podcasts for reassurance about losing fast.
