Default How to eat while flying for 32 hrs

I will be leaving to India for 1 month, and want to know how to eat? I have requested the kosher meal.

Wow, that is really difficult! On my longest flight I bought a few fruit bowls after I went through security, over 30 hours is crazy.

I imagine you will be stopping somewhere? Middle east or Germany?

I've found overseas flights generally will offer you food/snacks and they are generally not that bad. The vegetarian meals are usually the healthiest. I used to order those even before I was vegetarian. Also they generally don't offer you large portions. The best overall experience I had was on an asian airline, they kept bringing around fruit.

I've brought along a bunch of healthy snack bars, eat what the planes give and possibly snack at stops. Some of that time will obviously be spent trying to sleep.

I flew to India as well. (Business trip, 7 weeks)

And it was difficult!

NUMBER ONE on my flying rules is DRINK A LOT OF WATER. Ask for an extra bottle. Drink some when you've landed and are waiting for a connector. Drink water. The flights can be dehydrating and sometimes we have to wait for food when we're hungry. Water water water.

Number Two: Do the best you can with what you've got. On flights, I can't always estimate the points for things, but luckily the portions aren't generally huge. So I eat what is on the menu, but avoid the obviously high-calorie (no butter on my roll/don't need the dessert). And when waiting for a flight, depending on the layover it isn't usually too hard to find something light to snack on. Fruit and vegetables, unfortunately, are hard to come by on flights. Or they only come in small portions. But you can generally more than make up for it once you get over to India (Oh the mango....)

When in India - There's actually plenty of generally healthy food in India. For me, it all came down to portions. And avoiding too much creamy sauce that they top things with. Not sure what you're going to India for, or whether you've been before or not, but I hope you have a great time! It's a beautiful country with an amazing history.

32 hours sounds awfully long. It's usually a 24 hour trip including layovers. What airline are you flying? And how many stops? And where in India are you going?

I agree with Faerie, plenty of water. You can ask them for extra water. I always order vegetarian food on the flight even though I am not. It's a lot healthier that way I agree.

I fly this way at least 2 or more times a year. I try to eat a good healthy meal before I get to the airport because on the plane as the food can contain a lot of sodium.

Like Farie says above DRINK A LOT of WATER and if you are prone to leg swelling try to find some support panty hose or compression socks. They will help with that problem. I have a big issue with that happening when I fly from Seoul to NYC.

As far as eating on the plane....I see you ordered a kosher meal. The special meals although it is still airplane food usually come a out a little more well prepared. I would do as the others say here and choose to bring some healthy snacks.

I am not sure if you are in economy or business but when I fly business the airline I use sets up a snack buffet with some healthy choices. This helps a lot as well.

You may be sleeping for some of it or maybe not but bring some things to entertain yourself as well.

I hardly sleep unless I am utterly exhausted. I just can't do it unless I pass out. So I bring a book that is a pretty quick read and listen to the music stations...(I am also not much for watching the movies on the flights.)

You will not be in too bad a way as far as food chocies and staying on plan and like Nelie says you will probably have a lay over in an airport where something to eat will be available although not all terminals have a lot of choice. Narita in Japan for the airline I fly is VERY limited in choices. Just think portion and look for what you can as far as healthy goes.

Its a long story and a long journey but I'm on my 4th year of weight loss although I didn't lose any weight last year. Basically, cleaned up my diet, don't eat refined carbs, eat lots of vegetables, some fruits, lots of legumes and some amount of whole grains. Also plenty of exercise. Also constantly tweak things to keep weight loss moving. Lots of trial and error.
