Default 60's and Beyond #117

Good morning all!

Time for a new thread, haven't had much of a chance to visit so it was nice to see quite a few posts!

Ann yes I am still using the Wii fit but had a bit of a spell when I had the whooping cough. Did Holly end up getting one? Any chance of taking a photo of your quilt and showing it to us?

Suz you sound so busy with your garden. Is there anything you need to do (or can do) in winter? How large is your garden?

Gloria I only wish that I would never age by keeping busy, I don't think that is true somehow.
What a fantastic effort loosing 27 lbs

Slavika nice to see you as well. I gather your friend whose husband had a stroke is the friend I met at dinner at your house. I am very pleased for her eventhough it must be difficult to have him cry and wanting to come home again. A very sad situation indeed.
Good for you loosing 5lbs. So you will be going to Maui again, sounds good.

Thank you to everyone for your kind words about my new look website.
I have been spending many hours on it and I am pleased it is now finished.

Alan is still in Malaysia, another 4 weeks and he is home again.

A very busy week, today grocery shopping and a bit of a clean up, tomorrow the Melbourne Cup, 'the horse race that stops a nation' and out to lunch and my yearly flutter on the races. Wednesday the grand girls and on Thursday I have a couple from England staying for 4 days.
We met them on our last trip and they emailed me to find out a good place to stay whilst they are in Adelaide.
They are in their early thirties and are on an 8 month world tour.

Of course Tuesday will also be an important day for America to choose their new president.

I must have breakfast and get going....

Cheers
Maria

Hi, girls. Hope you are doing well today. It is still beautiful fall weather here and I just do not want to let it go. We finally have the beautiful reds and russets on the trees but they are falling like snow. And, of course, the mess of falling leaves!

I am going through a thing this morning. Yesterday we got beautiful ceramic tile on my little bathroom. It looks so clean and pretty. As you know, more work is about to start with new formica on the vanity, a shower stall, sink, cabinet, newly textured walls and paint. So, this floor was just the first step. But, we have kept Miss Ginger in that room during the day. She is so good, but occassionally "goes" on the pad we leave for her and sometimes misses it altogether. Can't take that chance anymore. You know? So, we have left her in the garage with access to the outside through the doggie door. Leon is afraid she will escape, but I think she will be fine. Why did he plant that thought into my mind?

I know everyone is very busy. And we have such a blessing that all of us can agree upon: THE ELECTION IS FINALLY, FINALLY OVER!

G'day all,

What an eventful day the 4th was and congratulations to all Americans on the election of a new president.
His speech in Grant Park, Chicago was very impressive, no 'high fives' or anything else of the usual hype but his message of 'yes we can' was spine tingling.
I hope he and America can realise the ideals expressed in his speech.
McCain was also impressive by his gracious acceptance of his defeat.
Truly a big day in history.

Another big first was the fact that I won $160 on the Melbourne Cup
I had a lovely luncheon and just picked a horse to bet on out of a hat as I have no idea about horse racing, well luck was with me this year and the horse came first!

My visitors from the UK are arriving any minute so I best be off.

Cheers

Maria, is it just you and me these days?

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend. We had Makenzie all weekend. I love that child and she is fun, but also high maintenance. She is just so very sure that Grandma is her playmate that by the time they left, I took Advil and slept for 2 hours. She is so much fun but does need to be doing something all the time. But she sure makes me laugh a lot.

Well, maybe the next little step to my tiny little bathroom renewal will start tonight. I hope the carpenter will come and see what needs to be done. Just having that pretty floor done has helped my mood. And Ginger has done great in the garage with the doggie door. We also bought her a heater and she will just wear her shirts this winter.

Our middle son and Gina, his wife, bought a new Buick Enclave. They have had it 2 weeks and got in a terrible hailstorm. Isn't that awful? Of course, they will get it fixed, just shouldn't happen to a new car.

Well, it is raining cats and dogs and is cold. BRR! I think winter has come.

It seems a bit that way Glenda that we are the ones keeping the homefires burning!
I know what you mean about Makenzie, she is very cute but yes they do get exhausting as much as you enjoy their company.
What a shame about the car, hail can certainly do some damage.

I am doing a website for an engineering firm, a young fellow just starting out. He is very nice but he doesn't know what he wants and I don't know much about engineering.
He will call to my home and we will do a bit of brainstorming so we both know what is required.

Summer is coming early and we already have had some hot weather.

Hope you are all well,

Cheers

Hi All- what is happening to our Thread? Are we all just too busy, or what? I know I used to come here every day, but now have slacked off. I get discouraged with the weight loss, or lack thereof. It just is not happening the way I'd like. And now I can't exercise the way I'd like since I have a stress fracture on my right foot. I have a soft cast and will go again on Monday to have it changed. then the Dr. says after another 5 days, all will be well. I sure hope so.

We had our craft festival at our clubhouse this morning. It was very good, and a lot of crafters with a lot of very nice stuff. I hope all the vendors did well with their crafts. I sold raffle tickets for a $100 gift card from Walmart. After expenses, we cleared $110 so that was very good. And of course everyone is hoping to get some help with the grocery bill.

Nothing else exciting around here.

Maria, I hope your project is going well. And will someone tell me some good news, that they have been successful in the weight loss dept. I need some encouragement.

I hope everyone is having a lovely weekend.

Ann

Hi Ladies,

Sorry I've not been around for a while. I just had a rough time of staying OP there for a while and just didn't write much any where. Then we went on a trip to see Tony's son and his family in Indiana and on to Texas to see my family.

Ann I too needed some encouragment that this would work and I got it when I went home to TX. My sister and her daughter and her hubby do WW Flex. They all looked good as they have lost weight (not sure how much), but my real inspiration was my nieces hubby. The week before I got there he reached his goal and made Lifetime. We had a family gathering since I was home for a visit and my niece did the whole meal. She made everything WW friendly even the desserts. It was delicious. I came back home and got right back on WW Flex my 1st day back. This is my 4th day back OP. I can't exercise much either, but plan to eventually work up to 15 minutes 6 days a week on my stationary bike since my knees seem to do better when I ride it. I'm not doing much junk foods either. Doing more of the healthy foods, but I am eating things that I really like so that I don't feel deprived while staying within my points. I'm also making it a point to use my WPA too. I believe it will work. I just have to learn that it just doesn't work as fast as I want it to. Hope you get to feeling better soon.

Glenda We got caught in some of that rain you had. Rained on us from TX all the way to this side of MS. I live in SC. We had clouds all the way home the next day. It caught up to us after we got home and rained here for 3 days. Can't complain though as SC has been in drought all year.
How terrible about the car. It can be fixed, but sure is a shame for it to happen to a new car. Little ones sure keep us on our toes. Our grandchildren will be here for Christmas and the young GD is high maintenance too. I kept her when she was little and she thinks we are supposed to play with her too.

[B]Maria[/B You sound busy with the website and smart too. I know just enough about the computer to get on visit a few site like 3fc and play games. Wish I had taken some classes to learn more when I was younger. Good luck on you and the young man getting the project together successfullyl

I'll try to do better about checking in more often. Hope everyone is having a good day.

Hugs,

G'day all,

Nice to see you Trish...by the way you are NEVER too old to learn

I know what Ann and Trish mean about this weight thing, I was really hoping to make a little dent in the excess weight I am carrying whilst Alan is away but alas I have shifted very little weight if any

Talking to Alan last night did not make me feel any better when he tells me he has lost 7 lbs He is not quite sure how he did it other then being away from home there are not the many temptations.
Alan isn't really overweight so why couldn't I have lost the weight!!!!

Tomorrow I am off to see a homeopath. I am very tired of the little sleep I am getting and the constant indigestion, hopefully she will have a remedy that will help.
I know one thing that would definitley help and that would be the ability to turn my mind off when I go to bed at night.

Have a great day all,

Cheers

Trish, I hope you listen to Maria. Gloria is so enjoying her lessons on her computer and is learning all kinds of fascinating things. You really are never too old to learn, and in fact, you can be awfully proud of yourself when you do learn something. I need help. What is the WPA you are mentioning. I too have had such a time with my weight. I am just hungry, darn it. Sounds like we are all having a bit of trouble. We all know those little girls can be pretty intensive when they expect grandma to be best friend, but I just love it. Have 3 boys and waited forever for this girl stuff.

Ann, so sorry you are feeling a bit depressed. I had two foot surgeries, one after another and felt that way too. Must be awful not to be able to be active. Another good reason to stay as active as you can. My sister was staying so thin and then hurt her back and has just ballooned up about 30 pounds because she doesn't move at home much anymore.

We are finally getting our bathroom going. Have the tile in and the sheetrock patched and the formica on the vanity and the new sink. Still lots to go, but I feel better now that the floor is pretty at least.

Maria, do some kind of meditation at night to get down from your computer highs. I used to do a yoga tape and it was wonderful. Not good sleep makes us all grumpy.

Peggy, Karen, Norma, Sally, please give me your thoughts on getting motivated on this weight issue. Glenda

Just had to jump in and wish you all a Happy Holiday!
Patty: As Glenda said I have been going to the Apply store at our local mall for One to One lessons each week. In August my DH got me an IMAC computer and it is so different so I signed up for their one year classes. I have learned so much and I know there is so much more to learn. Going tomorrow 8AM to 9AM before the mall even opens. I will learn more about movies. I will try to send short movies to the grandkids for Christmas if I can master this.

As for weight I had a Diabetes scare in early May and was told to watch my Carbs. I have been doing that as well as watching my portions. As of this morning I am down 30 #'s. I can't believe it has just been that easy. I don't eat dessert, most breads, potatoes or rice or pasta. Well I will have pasta occasionally but when I do I measure. I don't know how much more I will lose but I am in no hurry... it took a while to put on so it will go when it wants to.

Maria Sorry to hear you are not sleeping well. I know what it is like to have the mind running on fast forward when you want it to stop. Alan will be home soon and that might make you feel easier. I hope so. As for Alan's weight... it is a man thing. Jack lost 20 #s the first month I changed the way we were eating. Just like that and he didn't even try!!!

Glenda: Will your bathroom redo be done by Christmas . That would be a great gift.

Ann: Hope your stress fracture is getting better and you will be back to your usual active schedule.

Our grandson Sean, who will be 17 this Christmas Eve has not been feeling well for the last two weeks. His mom took him to the Dr.s and they did all kinds of tests which came back negative. They, then, did a Cat Scan which showed stones in his Gallbladder and some near his appendix. He will be having surgery on Friday noon. It will be Laparoscopic and he probable will be in overnight. He is a very tall muscular boy more of a man size than kid but he is still considered Pediatric. Chris, his mom, who is a nurse, said he will be a hurting puppy for a while because he is so muscular but being a kid he will bounce back sooner that you or I would.

Karen, Sally, Norma and Peggy...hope all is well with you and enjoy your Holiday.

Gloria

Hi Everyone,

Maria - Thanks for the encouragement about the computer. I hope you get help for your sleeping problem. Isn't it sickening how men can lose weight so much quicker than us women?

Glenda - Will you bathroom renovation be a Christmas present? A mess now but will be great when it is finished. WPA is 35 pts which is called Weely Points Allowed in WW Flex pts on top of the regular pts we are to eat daily for the week. EXample, I get 26 pts a day, but I can have the extra 35 to spend however I wish during the week... eating out or special occassion ets. This past week I only used 26 of the WPA which I like because I ate out and wasn't sure how accurate I counted because I had to estimate. on the 30 lbs lost.

Ann - I hope you are doing better.

Well I made the 1st week on WW and I lost 4.5 lbs. At this time I am enjoying the program and just hope I can keep the "mindset" I have right now.

Hope everybody has a good day.

Hi all, It's been along time since I posted or even answered any email. My heart has not been into it. I've been trying for the last 3 months to get used to a new pair of hearing aids and I finally had to give up after countless tears and lots of swearing. I now have a new pair again and am feeling some more of the same frustration. I will have to go back to see the man who is trying to help me. These are a little better but I still can't hear like I did before my others gave up the ghost. All this has not been good for me , My weight. My mood. I feel am so far into depression I don't think I will ever be normal again. I have a doctors appointment tomorrow morning I hope he can help me. On top Of that I am still having a problem with my iron count. And The blood specialist it talking bone marrow testing if I can't get it up by January. I'm wondering If there is any parallels between my trying to lose weight and iron count. I wonder if the doctor could check it out for me. I mean he takes my weight each time I do blood work. I'm sure it is all dietary. It is very hard to eat a a lot of iron rich foods unless I eat enriched cereal like Total. The the high iron tends to screw of the rest of my system.

I like the rest of you am struggling to lose pounds again. Granted it is not very much but a struggle just the same for me anyway. For the last year I have fought with the same 5 - 7 pounds I lose it. I gain it. I am finally back in my goal weight range but still need to lose 2 more pounds to be at goal. I finally was able to weigh in free tonight. Now I need to keep it off and with Thanksgiving coming up I know it will be hard . One thing I always do is journal my food. But the last 2 week I've high-lighted in yellow the junk i manage to get into. It was an eye opener. So I am trying to focus on good healthy food no junk!

Trish You don't really know me. I am here off and on . More off than on lately.
I used to be a weight watcher leader before I retired to Florida. I was able for many years while I worked to maintain a 50 # weight loss. Since giving up my job with them I have struggled. At one time 2 years ago I was up 16#. All due to, I feel ,to not attending meetings regularly. I did make it back to goal after 4 months but have had an ongoing struggle since to stay there.

Well thank you all for listening to my whine.

Karen - You have a lot going on right now. I hope you will be able to get it all straightened out. I too have struggled with the same pounds all year, but some of mine was my attitude. Got to where I was angry about the whole thing. Almost gave up. I am back on track and hoping to stay here until I get to goal. However, right now I have so much to lose that I am just concentrating on staying OP knowing it may take a loooong time to lose it, but it is best to be losing something rather than nothing. Good luck on making your goal.

G'day all,

Karen I can relate in some way to your hearing problem. Alan has hearing aids and I have to say I admire him for persisting. I probably would have thrown the things. We paid a lot of money for Alan's hearing aids (AUS$9000.00) so one would have thought they would be fantastic but not so.
He seems to be used to them now but it definitly is far from perfect.
It must be very frustrating for you and I am very sorry that you are feeling the way you are.

I hope you can get some help soon and be back to your old self.
You know you can always come here and have a bit of a rant

Wow Trish what a great loss, keep it going!

I went to the homeopath and she is great but told me what I really know but ignore most of the time.
She said the light of the computer screen stimulates the mind, diet food has so many preservatives and artificial stuff which does the same.
Basically try and eat as natural as possible and perhaps avoid all diet drinks and foods, shut my computer down no later than 5 pm and try and go for a walk or at least sit out in the sun for a bit.
She has also given me a remedy and all in all I am sleeping a little better.
My indigestion is much better since I have tried to do some cooking for myself.

I have to go to the cricket club to help organise for an auction fund raiser, Alan normal would have done that....

Have a great weekend all.

Cheers
Maria

Maria - I guess we are learning more and more how we need to avoid preservatives etc. When I talked to my nieces husband who had made his goal weight thru WW, he told me what he eats. I was impressed with how much natural foods like fruits and veggies he eats. I was also impressed with what he and my niece call their weekly splurge (reward) is to go to their WW meeting together and then leave the meeting and drive over to a soup & salad restaurante which is in the same mall and eat. I'm not sure I would have thought of a soup and salad place as my "treat" night especially when I was their ages. That and what the homeopath told you really makes us think.

Hope your sleeping gets better.
