Default Spelt Biscuits

Mmmmm.....I tried using the spelt flour...yummy! I don't honestly remember what white flour biscuits taste like. If you're looking for a whole grain biscuit, but don't really like whole wheat, these are great!

This is from allrecipes.com: http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Spelt-B....aspx?prop31=1

INGREDIENTS (Nutrition)
2 cups spelt flour
1 tablespoon baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
6 tablespoons butter
2/3 cup milk

DIRECTIONS
Preheat the oven to 450 degrees F (220 degrees C).
In a large bowl, stir together the flour, baking powder and salt. Cut in the butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Gradually stir in milk until dough pulls away from the sides of the bowl. You may need to adjust the amount of milk. Pat out on a floured surface to about 1 inch thick. Cut into biscuits and place on a baking sheet.
Bake in the preheated oven for 12 to 15 minutes, until the bottoms are golden brown.

NOTES:
Makes 6 biscuits.
Recommended to cut salt in half!!!

To make these SBD friendly, you'll have to substitute the butter for a non-hydrogenated one (such as SmartBalance.) And use nonfat or lowfat milk.

Does spelt have the fiber that whole wheat does?

Hee hee hee

Cottage - I must admit, I'm a butter freak, can't do substitutes. I was thinking this would be a good special occasion biscuit when you wanna splurge, but want to avoid cravings with white flour

Anne - the sign of the woman who made some spelt muffins (which is what got me trying to make it myself) said it 4x the fiber of ...was it whole wheat? I haven't found anything else regarding that, but it is whole grain. Nuttier and more mild taste.

(A great option for the holiday table!)

Spelt flour is fine to use for SBD. I use that and chickpea flour often.
