One of the definitions for alternative, which is appropriate for this subforum is...

a. Existing outside traditional or established institutions or systems: an alternative lifestyle.
b. Espousing or reflecting values that are different from those of the establishment or mainstream

There are many "alternative" lifestyles out there. I consider my religion to be outside the norm of mainstream American society. I also consider my views on children to be outside of the "norm". Thus alternative.
