A brisk but comfortable walking pace for me is 4.5mph at 6% or 7% incline. Comfortable, sustainable running speed is 5.5-5.6 mph at 1%-2% incline. Fastest? Doing treadmill intervals I can do 8.1mph at 1%-2% incline for 30-45 second bursts. Boy are my short legs a going like crazy when I do this! lol
I'm a slow one on the treadmill, really hate it...4.5 is the fastest and not for long. My norm is 3.5-4.0 at a slight incline...I walk much faster outdoors, maybe because I enjoy it more.
The fastest I can walk on one is about 4.0. Generally I do 3.5 on an incline. For running I could do 6.0 but usually did 5.5. I've never done the short interval bursts so I don't know what my max would be. Like froufrou, I'm faster just outside than on a treadmill...not sure why.
The other day at the gym, bored with the usual I thought I'd try running on the treadmill.
I did 6.0 mph for 2 miles, which amazed me as I've NEVER ran in my life on a treadmill or anyplace else really. I didn't know I could! I've tried running on the street, but always for short bursts - the treadmill didn't allow me to quit. I was pretty noodle legged afterward, but smiling like crazy and proud as heck.
One of the problems I have with the treadmill is the fear that comes with knowing that it is a piece of machinery that you are not in complete control of (even with the emergency stop button/plug that comes on most models).
At the back of my mind there is always a fear that I will place one foot incorrectly, I'll be sent backwards into the machine/person behind me, and my running days will be over.
FrouFrou - I understand what you mean. I've also heard there is also something like a 40% difference between a treadmill and running outside.
I asked this question because yesterday I beat my fastest speed - I got to 15.4 km/h as my highest during intervals. I was only there about 30 or 40 seconds but I made it! I used an online converter to calculate that it is 9.5 miles per hour.
On a side note, does anyone here find it (even if more challenging) somewhat more comfortable when running uphill at an incline of 5 or 6? For some reason I feel like it is less straining on my knees.
OMG you ladies are incredible and motivational!!!! My fastest ever was 3.8 at an incline of 3, which about killed me!!!! I felt at THAT speed that my legs were going so fast I'd have to run to go faster!
8.0 mph, but only for a couple of minutes. Now if I could just run that fast for an entire 5K !!! That's 7.5 minute miles -- a sub-24 minute 5K. I wish!
