OK. So I've been around here long enough to know how SBD works, how Ph1 goes, etc. But for some reason, I'm having a rough time, starting today (day 3.) I understand the SBD "Flu" and all that, but my problem on top of it is that I am STARVING.
I'm getting my water, I'm getting all my veggies, my healthy fats, my serving of beans, my dairy, my snacks, etc, etc, etc, and I'm getting enough calories. I just downed 8 full-fat (d'oh) cubes of colby jack cheese because I JUST CAN'T TAKE IT ANYMORE!!!!! (Only 110 calories but 9 grams of fat, 6 of which were saturated. Kind of defeats the purpose of the "heart healthy" lifestyle.)
Is this because I went hog-wild last week with all the starches? Is it just cravings making me insane? Or is it all mental? (Please tell me it's mental so I can accept it, tell my stomach to shut up, and move on.) My stomach is just growling uncontrollably. I've always been a bit of a "bottomless pit" but this is just ridiculous.
Any thoughts? Any of you have a harder Ph1 than other times you've detoxed? Any advice is much appreciated. Thanks girls.
Lisa, first of all - ! I'm sorry that you're having a rough go of it right now. It sounds like those bad carbs you had last week are giving you a run for the money! It just makes the detoxification process a little more difficult, but you can do it! Hang in there, and you know it will get easier each day. Go make yourself a nice hot mug of vegetable broth. It's both soothing and filling. Then go do your nails or something to keep your hands busy until it's time for bed. In the morning you'll feel so good that you made it without pigging out.
weezle, is your Ph1 start coinciding with approaching TOM to create the perfect storm? That's the time I feel like you are describing. How about a glass of milk? That helps with my hunger pangs sometimes. More beans? Do you think it's really hunger, or just craving things?
As you know the third day is usually the worst and the point of Ph1 is to get rid of the cravings.
Sorry, if your stomach is growling I don't think it's just mental. So eat something, and if it's a few too many nuts or some full fat cheese, I wouldn't sweat it. You are still getting rid of the cravings.
Thanks girls. Cottage, I never thought of having vegetable broth. I may do that now. What a great idea!
Schmoodle, I'm nowhere near my TOM. I wish I could blame it on that. My stomach is just roaring (I will say, the full-fat cheese helped a little) and I don't want to just eat and eat and eat. I'll try some milk too.
Milk and vegetable broth. Mmmmm. As I type this, Tommy's eating leftover pizza a foot from me. And he says hi.
I think it's probably a combo of stress + overindulging last week + Day 3 + uhh.... wanting to eat?
I recently tried phase 1 for the second time and it was brutal for me to. The first go around I had the headaches and tierdness. The second time I had NONE of that...just INSANE cravings...I stayed OP for about 5 full days, then couldn't take it anymore and ate a hearty serving of ice cream (I knew from reading the book that ice cream wasn't as bad as cakes and stuff). I amazingly did not gain anything the day after the binge and have been fine with cravings since. I'm finishing out week one (I started over after the ice cream) and have been practically perfect since.
weezle...whenever I go back to phase 1 I have to drink a lot of coffee and/or tea to help my appetite. I know we are supposed to limit our caffeine intake, but I'd rather have the caffeine than starch. The coffee usually makes me feel full.
I think when our bodies are "withdrawing" from the starchy carbs it gives us hunger pains/stomach growls to trick us into thinking we are hungry instead of being able to accept it just as a craving. You know how they say when we are craving certain things like for ex. bananas, it could mean our body needs potassium? I think it kinda works like that. Our bodies got so used to functioning on the bad carbs/junk that when we take it away, our bodies think we need it.
Oh Oh I forgot, V8 really helps me too. One glass of that and I'm full for at least 2 hours. Tomato soup sometimes does the trick too. I never tried vegetable broth like cottage said, but I think I may try that too from now on.
I hope it gets easier for you! Think of the little engine that could..."I think I can...I think I can...I think I can" lol If he could do it...we all can!
I must agree with JerseyGirrl, v8 is really filling to me. I had my 2 eggs this morning and 2 slices of turkey bacon and still felt a bit hungry, and the v8 always tops it off. I used to hate v8 but ever since doing the SBD, I have grown to LOVE it.
Weezle, I am sorry you're having a hard time on ph 1 this time around. My first time ever doing ph 1, I had a really hard time too, had the SBD flu and came down with an intestinal virus and kept cheating and just screwed it up completely. The second time around, I managed to do it right by making sure I got my dairy in, although I may have gotten TOO much in. Glasses of milk always help with my hunger. Good luck on ph 1 this time around, I am on my 3rd go around.
