favorite non-diet internet sites (besides 3FC of course!)
Hey all
I've been really tired, lazy, and unproductive this week and have spent a lot of time on the computer. This follows 2 weeks of intense busyness and productivity, during which my husband and I did a huge spruce up of our house in preparation for hosting a wedding reception at our house for 2 dear friends. So we painted inside and outside, did tons of yard work, etc., so I am ok with having a few days to "recover."
Every day this week when I get home from work (teaching summer school) I have wanted to sit on my butt on the computer. I've found some cool sites, and it has me wondering what sites others go to regularly?
My usual daily computer use is to check in at 3FC - sometimes 3 or 4 times, but generally pretty quickly, and to check my work and home email accounts. Besides that I don't "surf" much.
Here is one very cool food blog I found this week ... for a real treat click on her recipes index and drool over some of her dishes.... YUM. Her food is GORGEOUS.
-So, what sites do you visit daily (or regularly) besides 3FC?
-Are you able to surf at work?
-How much time do you spend on computer on a typical day?
-Does anyone in your house (roomie, DH, kids, etc.) complain about your computer use?
-How often do you have to pull yourself away from the computer to get things done?
Well, I work for myself so my boss is cool about work surfing (*grin*) and I RSS a lot of blogs, so I don't know if that counts in "visiting" a site or not. But here are some I love to visit.
Plus various news sites and a couple of photography related message boards that I belong to (professional, paid sites).
-Are you able to surf at work?
Yup. See above.
-How much time do you spend on computer on a typical day?
8-10 hours between work and personal
-Does anyone in your house (roomie, DH, kids, etc.) complain about your computer use?
Nope. I tend to bring my laptop downstairs and work from the sofa so roomie/husb. gets to see me ... and I break and chat and watch something, then go back to work.
-How often do you have to pull yourself away from the computer to get things done?
Not as often as I should - housework suffers. But mostly I'm pretty good about getting, up walking away, coming back. Otherwise I get neck and shoulder cramps.
This website is my favorite by far and I visit it often. I also like hungrygirl.com and shapefit.com. When I feel like dreaming about traveling, I go to tripadvisor.com. I spend about 2 hours a day online. My hubby and I make eachother a bit nutty, each trying to convince the other why they need the computer more. If he's working, he gets priority, of course. Otherwise, anything is possible! I love this question because I'm hoping to find some more good links.
I can get online at work any time, but during the summer, it's a lot less than in the Fall, I can spend a couple of hours sometimes. At home, I spend a couple of hours in the evening, and I live alone, so I don't have anyone to complain about it. I really don't have to pull myself away. I get bored after awhile and go do something more productive.
I love POGO.com its a game site... from solitaire, bingo, poker.. so many games... 95% nice chat... There is a 'free' option and a 'membership'... I paid $40 for the year... It is well worth it for me... the 'pop-ups' etc on the free side drive me nuts... worth checking out, but keep in mind even the page set up is different with free/member.... have fun........
Photo - I checked out Dooce... very interesting! That may be a new site for me to read!
BTW, I just realized that people might think the site I listed is a desert site (since it has candy in the name) - it's not! It's just a really beautiful food blog with fabulous recipes, using all local foods and produce, mainly mediterean (sp?) food actually. I have a couple of her bean recipes saved, but I haven't made any yet.
Harpo - pardon my ignorance, but what kind of site is WOOT? I didn't look at it too long, but I wasn't sure what it was all about...

It's a One Deal, One Day website. They have one product, nearly always at a discounted price (and sometimes VERY discounted) and they sell it until it sells out. They don't offer another deal until 12 p.m. central time the next day. They have all sorts of things -- but mostly electronics, gadgets, and computer related items. They've had some great deals on computers, cameras, and MP3 players, but I have all of those, so I didn't buy, but there's quite a few people who buy and then resell for a profit. They do sell refurbished things, which I personally don't buy, but there are plenty of people who do and never have any problems.
I'm on Neopets, though not as much as I used to be. I started playing in 2001 to procrastinate from midterms at college. Now I use it to procrastinate doing things around the house!
I also like my daily celebrity dirt fix at TMZ.
And I couldn't say for sure how much time I've wasted perusing videos on YouTube.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who checks out Icanhascheezburger every day.
I also check in at SwapaDVD and Paperbackswap regularly - they are free sites for swapping DVDs and books, the only two addictions I have left now that I've given up junkfood.
Surprised nobody mentioned E-bay yet. I love to browse thru there for favorite things. I also like puzzability.com if you like word games. Just go to the current games on their website. There are several different games you can play daily & weekly. If you get all 5 answers right in The Daily Post, you get your name in the hall of fame. Also merriam-webster.com has a daily word game I am addicted to. I check cnn.com, abcnews.com and my local news daily. Also check my home & work e-mail a lot and my on-line banking account. I also like hungrygirl.com, weather.com. & drweil.com.
I am not supposed to be on the internet at work unless it is work-related. I do have to fight over the computer with my son, as he is home from college & his wireless isn't working right now. My husband thinks I'm on the internet way too much & he's right. Sometimes I spend 4 hours or more & 3FC is a big portion of that. Pre-internet days I spent a lot more time doing housework, but now that my kids are older there isn't as much mess to worry about.
