I'm going on a 3 week road trip across the country and I'm looking for non-perishable snack ideas. We'll have a cooler in the car. I'm bringing Luna bars, baked ships, and low fat cheese sticks. I can't have dairy (except I can have cheese), and I'm allergic to artificial sweeteners. Ant tips? I know there'll be grocery stores on the way so I can get fresh fruits & veggies.
Raw almonds, walnuts, peanuts, dried fruits, granola.
These aren't low calorie though. You'll have to watch your portion sizes.
Don't just grab them out of boredom. Only if you're truly hungry.
What about sugar free gum and mints? They always keep my mouth occupied and help keep my mind off food (for a while anyway )
Wasa crackers or low-fat triscuits - pre-portioned out into single servings. With a cooler you could have sliced low fat cheese to go on the crackers.
As you buy veggies and fruit - wash, prepare and portion them (take a small cutting board, knife and sandwich or quart bags. They'll fit into the cooler)
You could take lo-fat microwave popcorn if you'll be stopping places where a microwave is available. You could pop it in the morning and portion it out for later in the day.
In addition to food treats, consider taking along a craft to do, like knitting, cross-stitch, or crochet. When I have a craft in my hands, I find I forget to go into the kitchen to hunt up snackies. Knitting also helped me quit smoking.
I bring dry cereal on long trips, and eat them one by one. This irritates my fellow passengers, and I burn calories while I duck out of reach of their smacking hands. ** ALSO ** Take comedy CDs out of the library to listen to, you'll be busy laughing, and forget snacking!
ooh, good suggestions. However, I can not have sugar free stuff. I vomit horribly if I have any. I am liking the popcorn idea. And I have quite a few comedy cd's
Thanks guys!
Premix oatmeal, flax, wheatgerm, dried fruit and find hot water while on your trip. Hotel breakfasts are horrible, but at least if you are stuck grab the non flavored oatmeal packets and some fruit. Apples and oranges travel great for fruit. Wasa rye crackers are good, and bring along some Skinny Cow cheese. Almonds and nuts. Beef or turkey jerky. If you are taking a cooler there are many more options. Turkey and chicken, porportioned out. Brown rice. Hard boiled eggs. Soy, rice or almond milk. Peanut butter. Carrots, celery. You could also premake some wraps and put them in a few containers, turkey or roast beef, light cream cheese, lettuce, etc. Yogurt. Smoothies. Lots of water.
yeah, I was planning on bringing my oatmeal with me, lile a great big nerd, ha ha! Isn't that sad, lol? Carrots and celery would keep well to. I like the wrap idea. I could pre-pack a few. Thanks!
I love Fiber One bars and Kashi Trailmix bars. Both of those would travel well. It's so tempting to eat the whole time you're in the car. That will be the toughest thing. Even eating too much of healthy snacks can ruin your weight loss...
