AFI came out with the 10 best movies in 10 genres. I was looking at the list and sent it to my DD who has seen about 23 of the movies. I've seen 45 or so. Then we went over the list with my DH. He's seen 92 of the 100!!! Can anyone beat that? Here's a link to the list:http://www.eonline.com/uberblog/b143...others_on.html
I've seen 76 -- I was surprised -- I'm a huge classic movie buff, but the Western/Sports categories are what got me. I've been meaning to see some Westerns though. Great list of movies. I love AFI's lists. They are always terrific.
Apart from the issue of how many of these films you've actually seen (I won't work it out now), what were you delighted to see make the cut, or disappointed to see miss it? My $0.02 worth:
- What, no Mary Poppins in the fantasy category? That was my favorite movie when I was a kid!
- 9 of the 10 animated movies (Shrek was the odd one out) were Disney productions. Did anybody ever see Gay Purr-ee (with Judy Garland's and Robert Goulet's voices) when they were a kid? I have a spot in my heart for that little non-Disney film and wish it would turn up again (it would have been a longshot at best for the final top 10 but it wasn't even on the AFI short list)
- I've never gotten a chance to see Warren Beatty's Reds (it turns up on TCM from time to time but I never have the time to watch: who wants to watch a 3+-hour movie starting @ 11 pm?) but always wanted to and was glad to see it named Epic #9 (bumping Dr. Zhivago from the designated Russian-revolution-opus slot?)
36.....I though I would do better than that...the western catagory got me.
I too loved and still love Mary Poppins! and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.......oh, I could go on.......
Also, no skating movies in the sports movie 'gory, although I admit I can't imagine a cineaste organization mentioning Ice Castles in the same breath with Raging Bull. Note to Hollywood: somebody please discover Maynard F. Thomson's novel Dreams of Gold and make a movie out of that, it's the only skating story I can think of that isn't geared toward 13 and under
54...I was surprised as I thought I would have seen most of the romantic comedies. Some of them I have only seen parts as they are on too late at night (of course, they were not counted in my total!)
