Default SPAM Comments

I have sent a message once through the blog "Contact Us" link and didn't hear back so I thought I would try here...

I have recently noticed a HUGE amount of SPAM comments being made on my blog. Everything from links to porn to term life insurance to car accessories. This is extremely annoying. It began about 2-3 weeks ago and seems to be getting worse. I'm getting at least one or two messages a day.

Is this issue something being worked on? Is something that I need to change in my settings? (I already have the comments set up for moderation first so these don't get posted)

Please let me know.

Thanks!

Unfortunately, spam comments are widespread across every blog platform. There are a few things that can be done to control it, but not eliminate it.

Under Options.. General.. Do you have "Users must be logged in and registered to comment" checked?

You might also be getting 'trackback' spam. Under Discussion Options, uncheck the option to allow trackbacks.

If you notice a frequency of certain keywords, you can enter them into the Comment Blacklist under 'Discussion' options. This will prevent them from appearing even for moderation.

Hopefully that will help

Thank you so much! I do believe I've seen the "trackback" mentioned in several of these SPAM messages. I do already have it set up so that users must be logged in to leave comments.

Again, thanks for getting back to me so quickly.

I'm having the same trouble, just started a few days ago. Just changed the trackback box, hopefully that stops or at least slows the amount of spam.

Have also added a bunch of words to the filter, as things were still getting through. Hoping it helps more.

The next time you get spam, would you leave them there but not approve them, and send me a PM? I'd like to take a look at them, and can probably block the IP addresses from the server.

Thanks
