nervous! (TMI warning)

Today I'm getting an IUD. After trying for sooooo long to find a dr who would give me one, it still seems like this came up all the sudden. I'm nervous! I'm scared it's going to hurt too much and they won't be able to insert it, and I'm nervous that maybe they will be able to insert it but I won't tolerate it well. Either way I suppose, it's happening today! I wish dh were here to hold my hand. I'm also nervous that I'm going to gain weight, but we'll see. With any luck it will go smoothly, not hurt too badly at all, and I'll be up working out tomorrow! Wish me luck!

*update* Ha. Well. I texted my friend when it was done to say "I don't see what all the fuss is about". Maybe the anesthetic makes a big difference, because I hardly felt anything. Didn't hurt at all. I kept waiting for it to hurt...and waiting...and all the sudden she was done! Dr said it was surprisingly smoothly. I'm a little crampy now but nothing too bad at all, not like what I was expecting. Thanks for the support ladies! Oh, and one plus - the cramps have made me totally lose my appetite

I don't see why you would gain weight - it has a very low hormone component - I think that its method of operation is more the physical device - ie not allowing the egg to stick to your endometrium - than the hormonal component.

Just be aware of it, and keep tabs on your diet. I'm sure you'll be fine.

And from what I've heard from people who get them, its relatively painless.

I got one about 4 months ago. I have been doing fine with my weight loss, so dont worry about that part. BUT I wish someone would have warned me about the pain because I was blindsided. It hurts. It is as simple as that, but the 'hurt' is MAYBE 30 seconds while they insert it. I cramped pretty hard that night, and then normal cramps for a week or so. I also bled for about 3 months, but very light. Now, I have no bleeding, and no cramping, and no babies ;]

I'm thinking the pain will be worth it...the dr told me she'd give me a local anesthetic which should help. Luckily, this dr seems pretty good at her job. She had to give me a pap before I could get the IUD, and it was the quickest and least uncomfortable pap I've ever had. Hopefully this goes the same way. It's good to hear that you didn't gain weight rynkay. I wasn't *too* worried about it but the dr told me it was still possible. Well, of course anything's possible! Just hope it goes smoothly.

I have had one for almost 2 years and ITS THE BEST!!! Yes, it was very painful, but totally worth it. Don't have to remember to take a pill every day. And I used to suffer from horrible PMDD and really bad cramps. Now I have 1 day periods and thats it!

A lot of women aren't even presented an IUD as an option, and thats a real shame. Best decision I ever made.

Do you have to have children first to get any IUD? I know the Mirena commercials say it's for women who've already had children. I think IUDs sound like an awesome option. And I'm not sure I want kids, but I'm not really prepared to eliminate the option of having them either.

I never had kids and had the Mirena placed in over a year ago. It can be removed and you can try get pregnant at any time. It even says that on the commercial.
It did hurt very bad to put it in, and I had cramps once in a while for few months, and also bleed for few days during that period.
But now I am cramp and period free and LOVE it.
At the beginning I also had pimples in my face, but they went away.
I don’t think it changed anything with my weight.
Now a friend of mine (who had put it at the same time I did) hated, because the pimples didn’t go away and she still had her period. She removed it this month.
I think it works different for each person...

I have had the Paragard IUD for almost 2 years now and while it did hurt a bit it was certainly bearable. I think the worst for me was cramping immediately after and the cramping I get during my cycle each month.

I did get abdominal bloating for a few months after and it is not uncommon for that to happen.

It is definately worth getting imo, no condoms, pills etc to remember.

s rosa~ Glad everything went well! Sounds like you have a very competent doctor!

Ashley~ The only reason the commercial says it's recommended for women who've had children is because it's easier to insert an IUD when your cervix is partially open. So after having a baby, when a woman goes in for her 6 week post-partum checkup, her cervix is still kind of open, making it less painful to put the IUD in the uterus. I've also heard another time it's recommended to get one is right after your period because your cervix is partially open then too (tho not as much as after having a baby).
