I've thought about this a lot as well and how genetics plays into things. I am bigger than my mom in weight more than likely but we carry it very differently and I am often, though not right now, a size smaller than her (I'm heavy on top and in the hips/butt; she carries more weight in the stomach). My mom has always struggled with weight same as I have but she has always maintained somewhere between a size 8-14.

We are Danish so my dad...well lets just say he is a big guy (think Hamish in the Braveheart movie and you'll get a good idea of his build and look). My sister is on the larger side as well.

I always thought I took after my mom's side, as we look alike, but with weight and how I put it on I haven't figured it completely out yet.

My huge extended family consists of all these beautiful in-shape people, except one aunt on my mother's side and a borderline overweight cousin. My dad is a thinner guy, but I wouldn't call him thin. My mom has always "struggled" with her weight, but she's petite and a size 8/10. My brother and I are both overweight. At 6'1, my brother weighed nearly 300lbs, dropped down to 190 (which did NOT look good on him), went back up to about 220 where he looked really healthy and fit. He maintained there for quite some time but in recent years he's made his way back up to about 260. He's still a gym rat, runs 6 or so miles at a crack, but eats like ****. We definitely stick out at family get togethers and weddings.

All of my immediate family members are obese, although it's hard for me to say if it's genetic or lifestyle factors playing a larger role. My mom's side definitely has some weight issues - both her mother and sister have also been overweight my entire life.

My dad's mom and sister, on the other hand, have always been tail and rail-thin. I'm actually starting to wonder if my build is more like theirs, since my bone structure is actually pretty small (just hiding under pounds and pounds of fat ). I'm soooo curious to find out what I look like under all of this!

soo im tall and big. :sigh:

This is so me! Lol. My dad’s side is taaaalll (all the men are 6’3 or more) and very thin. My aunts have babies and lose all the weight and then some within a week and have to have their jewelry sized specially for their tiny tiny bones.

My mom’s side…whew. Short and fat. And I say that lovingly. My mom is 5’3 and her brother and parents are both shorter than me and all heavy. It definitely has a lot to do with the way food is viewed and eaten in the respective families. My moms family owned a very successful restaurant that they all worked in during my moms high school years. They served all your typical southern food and lots of it. My dad comes from a poor family with six kids….so.

My mom is about 5'3" and 120 lbs and my grandmother (her mom) is about 4'10" and maybe 100 lbs soaking wet. Needless to say I did not inherit their genes. My dad's side of the family is all very big boned and tall so I guess I'm kind of in the middle- medium frame, average height, slightly overweight.

This is a very interesting thread!

My mom's side has all overweight women AND men. Two of my aunts just had the lapband surgery. My mom is around a size 16 now, but she was in 22s but started eating better. She did WW and doesn't eat after 8. I think genetics has a little part in it, but the eating choices don't help. We are in Southeast Texas... so southern food was usually on the menu.

My dad's side has some obese people too.. his sister is, but his mom isn't. she has a weird shape.. no hips, boobs and a flat but.. so I definetly didn't take after that side. My dad however is really small.. his pants are only one size bigger than when he was in highschool.

My sister is more like my dad's side with no hips, but I am more like my mom's side... curvy with a big booty :P

My dad is overweight, my mom is overweight, my sister and brother are also overweight. It doesn't really seem to be anywhere else in my family, though. My grandparents and other family are all on the slim side. I think my siblings and I just learned bad habits from our parents. I used to be slim...I think I just developed bad habits over time.

My dad and brothers were always thin (though lately my dad and one of my brothers are developing beer bellies), and my mom and I have always been the fat ones in the family.

Everyone on my mom's side of the family is really skinny... until they either have babies or hit their late 30s. Then they become either obese or morbidly obese. My mother started gaining a lot of weight after she had me at 32. My aunt, grandfather, and dozens of cousins, great-aunts, and uncles are all ranging from overweight to morbidly obese on that side of the family.

On my dad's side of the family, only my one aunt is morbidly obese, and she's been like that since she was a very young child, so much of it is a genetic predisposition, but she doesn't help anything with the way she eats.

I would love to be able to blame my weight on a genetic predisposition inherited from my mom's side, but I know I got this way from overeating.

My mom was 5'7" and 110-120 until she had me and my sister in her 30s. Now she is 135-140 and in her late 50's. She thought she had a weight problem when she got to 145 and joined WW. Oh how I wish I got those genes. She has a sister who is also tiny, but not as tiny as she is. Then she has 2 larger sisters, one of which is morbidly obese. On my fathers side there are heavy to smaller sizes as well. My grandmother was thin, but some of the girls on that side just have bigger frames. I got more of my moms genes while my sister got more of my dads. At the same weight (which we are not right now) I am smaller than she is. She had broader shoulders and always stronger muscles. Maybe I can convince my body to be closer to my mom's than it is now.

My parents are both thin (dad- 5'10", 160; mom- 5'6", 117) but they work for it. My mom has 3 sisters and a brother who are all overweight/obese. My dad's side is all slender/normal. I'm Irish/Hungarian on my mom's side, and Armenian/German on my dad's side.

My mom and sister are both overweight and big-boned, but they're also tall -- my mom's almost 6'! My brother, though, is stick-thin at 5'10" and 135 lbs. He's very small-boned. I think I'm small-boned as well, because even at 140 lbs I feel and look like I'm carrying a lot of extra weight. And on my mom's side, I only have one cousin who's overweight, but she has all sorts of drug and alcohol problems.

My whole family is short so im actually taller than some of them. Never met my dad but the pics i saw he has always been thin (hes deceased now). My grandma on that side is thin, so are her kids but my cousin is rather large but so is her dad.

On my moms side my mother was obese (well over 300lbs) but got a gastric bypass and is now stuck around 180 shes actually starting to go back up. She 5ft 0in. my grandpa was a little on the overweight side but also did no physical activity at all. the most exercise that man got in my life was getting off the couch to go pee. There was a permanent indentation of his body shaped in the couch. Everyone else has always been thin on that side.

I have no siblings to compare to.
I tend to yo-yo really badly probably as bad as Oprah.
I was 124 and it would never budge till i had my son.
Then it was closer to 138 but it would budge a lil bit here or there if i was really lazy or vice versa.
Had my daughter and it seems to get stuck the most around 150 but can flux a lot

My dad's side of the family is really thin, but other than his mother, there aren't any other women in his family.

My mother's side is consistently obese. I'm a size 18 and I'm the thinnest one! HA! My mom and I have somewhat similar shapes except I carry a lot of weight in my hips where she carries it in her stomach. I have thick thighs. Anytime I buy jeans, by the time they fit over my thighs, they're baggy on my waist. So frustrating.

I have never been thin though, unlike my mother's family. They have gained weight over the years from what I've been told. I was a fat grade school kid, fat in middle and high school as well. I think I was like a size 14 in 5th grade? Kinda ridiculous. I weighed like 180 in middle school. ARGH!

My mom's sister though... she REALLY carries her weight in her hips. I mean, I have big boobs, and she's like a 46B. I don't really follow the shape of anyone, I'm just fat like everyone. :/
