Losing my hair! Help!

Could it be diet?! :?:

freshmanweightorbust 05-06-2009 11:40 PM

Well, that depends. How is your diet?

ShutterK 05-06-2009 11:48 PM

About 1500 calories a day. I need to add more veggies and fruits, though. And maybe protein??? I thought I was doing okay but we aren't going shopping til tomorrow night so I've been skimping by without fruit.

i think i've heard a diet too low in fat can cause hair loss!

Iconised Ghost 05-07-2009 12:11 AM

i think fat and protein are pretty essential for not losing hair....do you eat any nuts or seeds?

Thats no good. Are you making sure to talk multivitamins? Maybe you should see your doctor or nutritionist if you think your diet is causing your hair to fall out

I had this happen to me about a year ago. I saw my doctor and he said it was delayed reponse to a stressful situation that I had been in - because there was no other reason.

This could be the reason for you - or it could be diet or change of seasons.

Thanks guys, I looked it up online and it pretty much says "hair loss can be from anything"... *eyeroll* So I guess I will make an appointment if it keeps happening.

I started losing hair a while ago. I'm pretty sure it's not my diet or anything. I think it was some medication I was taking. I went to the dr and had a bunch of expensive bloodtests done and they didn't find any reason for it. It stopped falling out for a while, but it's started again. I suspect it's because I started taking birth control after being off it for a while.

I lost hair in droves when I was in my twenties due to low calorie, low fat diet. It came back when I went back to eating healthy again. Now that I am in my forties (sorry to crash your forum) my hair is thinning dramatically on top, unfortunately this time for me its heredity and I will soon be in the market for hair pieces because I am not ready to admit that I am this damn old!!!

I am having hair re-growth now. My diet was definitely not low fat before I got healthy (and while I was losing lots of hair), but it was most definitely bad fats. It didn't really start growing in noticeably until about 9 months into my current healthiness, so I don't think it was just general nutrition either. The things that changed later on in my process were: becoming vegetarian, increasing fat (although I wasn't below 20% before), and starting omega 3 and vitamin D supplements. So I'm not sure what to attribute the re-growth to. It seems like it's the supplements, plus maybe I really need above 30% fat (maybe that threshhold varies a lot between individuals).

Before I experimented with higher fat, I would have said I didn't miss the fat at all, with the great foods I was eating. But now that I have experimented with it, I find that it really makes me more full, and for longer; and it also really helps flavors distribute and meld. I'm vegetarian, and the only dairy I have is some Greek yogurt and parmigiano or feta cheese, so my higher fat intake is mostly plant sources, which I feel really good about.

I experienced hairloss too. I think in my case it was due to an extremely lowfat diet for several months coupled w/the fact I was using Alli. I put more protein in my diet, upped my good fats and quit taking Alli and things improved. Some vitamins may also help. My hairloss was similar to what happened after having my children but it wasn't stopping. Thank goodness I had too much to begin with!

Thanks ladies. I've been eating great since I posted and it's still falling out some (though not as much). My hair is really, really thick so I'm chalking it up to shedding like a dog since I've been exercising/overheating a lot. LOL

Just don't stop eating healthy because it can take hair anywhere from 3-9 months to start growing back again after whatever caused it to start falling out is taken care of.

It can also take up to 3 months after say starting a new med, high fever or stress etc for the hair to start falling out so it almost never immediately starts falling out or growing back once the problem is resolved.

Are you losing some hair, or a lot of hair? I always shed in the spring- it seems worse than it is, because my hair is long, and it stops after a few weeks.
